I recently bought a 65 Ranchero and it has a conglomeration of parts on it. It has a 1966 200 I6 block, a 61 head and a 63 exh man. Can someone tell me how to ID whether the head is from a 144 or a 170.

In that year, the 144/170 heads were the same.

A popular mis-conception is to install the 144 head on the later 200/250 engines for higher compression. The problem is that the 144/170 heads had the smallest valves and intake log. The best way to do it is to install a 250 head and mill it to achieve the proper compression. That way you have the compression you want with the larger intake log and valves and the larger 1bbl bolts right up.

To clarify and elaborate on Al's response; the only casting we've ever found on a reasonably sure factory 144 is a C0DE casting. It was used from '60 - '62 model years. It had 1.467" intakes and 1.266" exhaust valves with chambers measuring anywhere from 44 - 51 cc.

170 casting are either C1DE or C1VE, for the '61 - '62 model years, most of these heads had larger intakes at 1.52" and the same exhaust as the 144 above. Chambers have been measured from 48 to 53 cc.

Both heads had a 1.5" carb hole the C0 castings have an intake tract volume of aproximately 850 cc. The C1 castings have typically measured 890ccs.

Al is absolutely right! Neither a 144 or an early 170 head are helping you. It doesn't matter which. Do yourself and your Roo a favor and update to a late model 200/250 head- Gain a 1.75" carb hole, hardened valve seats, 1.75" intakes and 1.38" exhaust and a 1245 cc intake tract volume.

Check the sticky post at the top of this forum for details.
