hello board please help i have a 64 Futura that had a 200 ci 6 in it with a 4 speed(unk type) do i stay with the 6 as a mild street build up or go with the V8. it just looks so empty in the engine with the 6. ive had this car since 68 and it belonged to my brother since his return fro Nam in 66, sooo waht do you say???

i was in the same me boat as you a few months ago my grandpa had given me a 66 mustang with the 200 i have had a few chances to get a 289. However i decided to keep it original i have never been one to cut cornersz so if i decided to do it would to me anyway changine the rear end to an 8 incch 5 lug and the front to a 5 lug. However if you are still looking at the choice a v8 would certainly give you more stock power than the 6 there are a number of things you can do to your six like get the new head and a better carb from classic inlines you can even turbochare it by then you will be making around the horsepower of a 4bbl 289. However a 289 with the same mods will be making a lot more horsepower.

its a tough decision the look of a v8 but ur right there r a lot of new things to do with a six and no suspension mods at first

Unless you go with a 302 or 351 parts availability and cost seem to be about the same. When I got my stang I was planning on going with a EFI 302 but after finding this site and playin with the 6 I decided to keep it. During the repair/rebuild there were several times I started thinking a SBC would be nice, like when I spent 1 1/2 hours trying to bash the used and abused oil pan flange straight. If it was a SBC I could have got a new chrome pan for $40 in stock at my local store. There have been a few other 'special order' issues so just dont count on being able to get 'hard' parts in a hurry. My local Napa wharehouse has had most of the 'soft parts' gaskets and hoses and such in stock, the local stores dont. I also like being differnt. My other toys and projects in the works have Cadillac 8.2/500 's in them just because thats not something you see everyday. Parts are about the same for the Cads. I have $4000 into a more or less stock rebuild on one of those.

8) i had the same decision to make when my aunt gave me her 64 futura, 170/3spd. i pondered building a 289 for it, but decided instead to build a 250. i still have not decided on a transmission for the car though.

Just an opinion, but I would stay w/ the original, sure cost twice as much and half the rwhp, but the satisfaction of doing something different.

I was at a local "car show" and one guy had a chebby 6, chromed, lowered, and sounded great. More guys where hovering over his engine bay than any other.

Depending on how much you want to spend.

If your thinking of dropping a V8 in then keeping it stock doesnt seem to be as important.

if it were me I would be tempted to drop a 250 I6 in and do some performance mods. Good fuel economy, nice power and V8 like torque and it still looks mostly original.

Ok, here's my take on it. when I brought my '67 Falcon to my autoshop class in november for engine rebuild, the teacher told me I could have the 302 that was sitting in the corner ( is/was actually his ) if I wanted it instead of the 200 6cyl, and I could have the AOD out of the '88 crown vic 5.0 that we have as a parts car. well I turned the offer down, and began building the 6 like I planned. I have over $4k into it, and it will be turbocharged& intercooled and 'should' put out 260-320 HP at the flywheel. there's been a few road blocks, such as 2 cracked heads, getting new valves for the good D8 head I got at a pick & pull, and figuring out what retainers to use for the 302 intake valve springs I got ( 302 2 peice intake retainers with 144-250 2 peice center sections is what works ). I think you know what I mean

I don't know how you could say that the six doesnt look good, my sisters 289 in her 67 mustang just looks chubby, while the six in my falcon is sleek and almost cute :). Plus i really love the way it sounds at idle even with just being stock, i just want to be louder.

Other then that an I6 modded out like crazy and a v8 suspension would probably handle quite decently and be stiff enough. I know that just adding some gas adjust shocks in my falcon stiffened it up way more then it was when i bought it, i'm almost happy i didn't get the v8 springs. So an i6 can be built to handle way better then a v8.

i 2nd that idea. nice stock looking 250, 2bbl carb and a chrome header hanging off the side would look killer. we're all bored of seeing sb fords at the car shows anyway.

i agree there are plenty of people at a car show with a 289 and a 6 cylinder vin. a 250 or 200 with a turbo and the proper mods like a head car and pistons would make about 300hp. imageine pulling into a carshow with that and a good dual exhaust i have seen v8 guys scared of that sound.

Ford Aust have built the Turbo Six to be so powerfull now it rates more than the V8. If I had the opportunity I would be looking for a Sixty's Falcon to put one of these BEASTs ( Factory ) Turbo motors into an early Falcon.

When I bought my Fairmont and saw it had a six, I thought, "cool, I can swap in a smokin' 302". Then I found this site and with the help of the "locals" and the search engine got the engine working real well.
I ended up re-evaluating what my needs are for this vehicle.
I don't have need for an engine that blows a V8 away.
My needs are for something that's got great drive-ability and will last a long time and is cheap on parts, and I (for the most part) can work on it myself, as opposed to say a more modern computerized engine.
And it isn't going to scare my wife when she drives it.
It doesn't matter what engine you have in your car there's always something out there that's bigger and faster anyways.
As long as what you have satisfies your "needs" (when you romp on it)
And this little six won't make my car do wheelies but it gets me around just fine. I think a good benchmark for an efficient engine should be at least 1hp/Cubic inch, so there's quite a bit of work necessary to get this little six up to that kind of power.

well it looks like its gonna be a 6 ok now any suggestions? or is that a new thread

suggestions depend on what you prefer.

showroom-condition resto?
rather stock looks with some extra pep by 2bbl carb, DSII and headers?
nostalgia hop-up sporting 3x1bbl and finned rocker cover?
streetrod billet style with DUI and megasquirt?

btw- within city speed limits, a slightly tweaked and tuned 200 can outrun a stock 302 and still get even better gas mileage

Congrats, and welcome to the club!! Try to find another web site or forum with as much info as this one on any other engine, you can't.

I'd would start with the "bible" (Performance Six Handbook). Read it two or three times, you learn more every time you read it. And because a lot of members are Falcon and Mustang owners, we can answer more then just engine questions. Come on in the water's fine..

welll If you want to fill up space a nice turbo setup woudl do the trick. PLus you gain gobs of power and get a huge wow factor, yet its still easy to work on heres an older pic of mine:

plus I mave some more chrome thats in there for some added bling and POWER! lol

problem solved. :D
