Hi Folks,

I bought a 1963 XL Falcon Deluxe sedan a few years back, it was someone elses project that I am finishing. I was told that the motor is a 250 2V, but I am questioning where it came from.

I have searched the forum and can work a few things out, but please have a look at this photo and see if you can determine what it is?

A bit off topic, I am guessing this is a chrysler centura diff too, anyone know?

That code just tells you what block it is (I guess an XY or XA 250).

The actual engine number will tell more.
See the sticky post in this forum.

post a pic of the inlet manifold/carb.is the diff 4 stud or 5 stud?does it have small round lugs for coil springs?

Engine is an XY/XA/XB 200 or 250 for sure.

Chrysler diffs had a generic A284XXX-code with the diff ratio stamped on it. Aussie Mopars had the option codes held by dealers, and they were often written in the dealer literature by Todd Motor Group In NZ, and Tonsley Park (Head office).

Rundown is 1966-2002 Falcons, 1972 to 1980 Cortinas, P76's, Valiants, and 1985 to 2001 Commodores ran the BW 78 diff, so all you need is the code, and the diff ratio can be found without having to lift the tin plate. Not that its a problem. The seal is easy to RTV back up, and the ring gear, pinion, and ratio are etched or cast into the pieces if you look closely.

There are 12 ratios, some still made by Dana Gear to BTR and BW specs. The Falcon Utes still use it today.

They are
4.11,
3.9,
3.7,
3.5,
3.45,
3.27,
3.23,
3.08,
2.92,
2.78 (claimed),
2.77
and 2.54

It's a 5 stud diff, 5 x 114.3 pattern, I have EF XR6 tims on it at present.

and it's a 2V head:

note the 11mm leads :-) had a mate who worked at Eagle leads make them up for me for $AUS40!

I have to clean it up a bit, sitting in a carport isn't good for the old girl.

Whats the go with the 2.78???
I have a diff tag in front of me that says 2.79 ford P/N 80BA-4005-DB

I don't know!

The Gregories manual for Falcon and Fairlane Sixes and EFI's (#226) states there was a 2.78:1 option.

Ford were always doing funny stuff! Typo's, or not marked bellhousings wioth no Ford code were common. Or like the Stromberg 1-bbl carbs on 1963 to 1967 Falcons with Sydney spelt out as Sidney.

I'll bet there were others options, but I'm picking a typo.

In the early 144/170/200/221/250 Falcon handbooks, there was reported to be a 4.00:1 option

Plenty of oddball 9" diffs had some different diff ratios by as little as 0.01:1.

IIRC, XT GT's had 8" 2.93:1 limited slip diffs, and all 8" Maverick sedans had the 2.79:1 option. Ford Oz later claimed 2.92:1 for some of there BW 78 diffs. Holden had a 3.08:1 diff in the VK which was a BW 78. There 2.78:1 was supposed to be available only as the early Six Cylinder Salisbury (Torona-based) diff.

Some of the Transit trucks had other ratios.

sorry this is totally off topic. but how does the xl look with xr6 rims on it? would you mind posting some pics please, because ive always liked to be traditional by putting on stock wheels, and hub caps, but i would like to see how late model rims go on the old cars.
thanks
Chris

They are genuine 1995 XR6 Falcon rims, 15" x 7" with 50 series tyres.... only done about 20kms since new... The bloke i bought them off was putting after market wheels on.

i don't know about earlier cars but the xr/xt factory manual states that a 4.00:1 diff ratio was available in both 2 and 4 pinion diffs to fleet and commerical vehicles only.
