Ignition experiments

I was tinkering in the garage today and found an old TFI coil from a late 80's - mid nineties Ford something. It's one of those square looking coils with a steel yoke outside the coil body. I decided to check it out.

I also borrowed a DII distributor from 60 Falcon to see if I could make it fit the hybrid. But first, some experiments with the distributor and coils.

I wired up a duraspark, ElCheapo GM module, and a stock Mustang coil. Zap, Zap.... Ok, a spark that looks like the spark you might get from points...not too impressive. Barely visible spark at .050".

Same setup, but with an afermarket repalcement coil. Zap, Zap....similar results, maybe a little stronger. Stronger spark at .050".

Hooked up the TFI coil. ZAP, ZAP! Big white spark. Opened gap, same thing at .060, .080. .100, and .125.... The GM module and the TFI coil seem to work well together.

I spent a little time in the catalogs looking over some ignition caps and it seems that there is a small cap that came on the original Duraspark. It fits the DII distributor as well. The cap is about the same size as the regular points cap, but is secured with screws to the distributor.

Quick measurement shows this to be very slightly shorter, maybe 3/16", than the points distributor, so we swap it in. Still a tight fit, but I have a DII in the Locost. I prefer them to the Pertronix I had been using.

Made up a little wiring harness, heat sink for the module, and an aluminum bracket for the coil and mount it to the engine. Give the engine a quick test crank. Big, beautiful sparks! This might work.

This is a good setup, very powerful, and very cheap.

Distributor $49.95
GM Module $14.99
Distributor cap $6.95
Rotor $2.98
TFI Coil $15.99

Under $100 will get you a really good ignition. Go to our Duraspark tech page for wiring info. LOTS easier than wiring the ford box, and lots smaller.

Barely. I have to pull all the wires, unscrew the cap, and feed it in under the intake. Might not be possible with a stock intake.

hmmm...maybe I'll get one of these coils and try it with a MSD.

I have an extra coil wire somewhere I can hack up to put a new connector on. I'm assuming it's the coils with the clamp on wires? I have on in my exploder.

Could'nt I just hook up a TFI coil to my DSII setup?
Currently driving an 82 Futura.
I have a good TFI coil on an 84 Turbo T-Bird I got for $200.

There have been mixed opinions expressed here about that. Some say the TFI coil will draw too many amps and burn out the DS2 module, another fellow wrote that he has been running it that way for a couple of years. One person stated that the DS2 module with the RED grommet (California module) is rated for the higher amp draw. Having fried a couple of DS2 modules over the years I suspect that they don't cope with high amps very well, and considering the fact that they were designed with a lower amp draw in mind I will stick with the HEI module which indeed WAS designed for the HEI coil that is virtually identical to the TFI coil. You could just as well use the HEI coil too for that matter.

The TFI/HEI is a good, inexpensive improvement over the stock DS2.

Another upgrade that I read about but haven't tried yet is using points to trigger the TFI module and coil.

I am also now running a TFI coil. Went to AutoZone and ordered a coil for a 1989 F350 with a 460. Seems to work great with my 250 and stock D2 setup.

I installed a TFI coil in my '83 Jeep J20. Been 3 years now and no problem at all. Made a significant difference in the engine. Just be sure to regap your plugs to take full advantage of the power increase.
