Introduction and gas tank sending unit question

cool, I'll check the link out w/my coffee.

I would like to keep the three/tree, but the 300 that a friend might have for me is complete but an automatic. Pros/cons to doing a complete swap (engine/trans)? The auto would prolly be a hassle to fit....

Would a 5-speed trans (from an f150 for ex) fit on there - is the linkage similar to the 3-speed?
Does it have external links?
Would the shift pattern work on the tree or would I have to go to the floor?

Answered my own questions. I looks to me like that swap wouldn't work. All the 5speed/f150's that I find seem to be top-loaders. hm.

lots o questions...thanks!

well, now you're moving out of where i can point you
i will say that i'd think that swapping a manual for an auto will prolly be about as hard as swapping a small six for a big six
you'll just have to make sure that you've got all the correct parts, and bolt 'em all in

by the way, you, or someone owes me a beer
let the wild rumpus begin !

Nice little van! I am rather find of the "three on the tree" too! Try autokrafters.com for the sending unit. To cross reference, try a Hollander's manual...it has saved me several times!

Good luck!

GearHeadGirl,
You may want to check out http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/oldeconolines We're specific (61-67) and the home for EconoHeads from all over the world (Yes even Japan!!). A few things. NW falcon had a unit in stock for the Econo, I got mine there and suggest you send a pic to us of yours to see if it's the stock one. Second, Someone mentioned that a v8 came stock, never did one go in the earlies however we have a bunch of people who have put one in. The 200 is a great, easy, drops right in, motor for the Econo and plenty of power to add with the help of this site. I don't think you will find any issues with halling a bike around, these trucks were built for service and have the ability to work hard. I know becouse my 64 PU has a 200 with all the goodies these guys suggest. The 240 was a later stock motor so it has the hardware to get one into the Dog House. I also converted mine from a standard to an Auto with a donor truck, not hard as long as you have a donor. wouldn't try making the parts. Take a look at my site http://photobucket.com/albums/v137/Hyprdrv/ for some ideas on what can be done. By the way nice truck!!

Good luck,

hey ya'll!

thanks for the posts!

asa67_stang: I owe ya a beer. In Chicago. ;-)

MontegoMan: I will contact autokrafters today. cool! I looked up the Hollander's manual - those books are expensive! I think I need to find someone who already has one....

Steve: thanks for the info and links. Yer pickup is nice! I will check out the other pics when I've got some free time this afternoon.
I just joined the oldeconoline list! yay!

thanks! Except that my radiator blew yesterday. Ah, old bits....
Perhaps time to update to a newer, shinier, better radiator.... Altho I hate to put new bits like that on if I'm gonna switch out the motor soonish.
hm.

another female. good. we need watching around here....

LOL!
No way, man! I'm not taking /that/ job. I got enough trouble taking care of my dog....

asa67_stang: hey, what better excuse for a roadtrip? heh

so get something that will be applicable to both...like 4 row aluminum job....

eh?

I've been riding air cooled bikes for the past few years (well, except for my honda), I know little about radiators....

radiators are generally measured by how many rows they have (a decent way of doing it, but surface area is really a better way of doing it), stock were (i think) two or three row, brass radiators
add more rows, add cooling capacity
aluminum conducts heat better than brass, so it sheds it faster

the aluminum in the Rad, and the iron in the block will try to react though, so you have to have something that will react before the aluminum does

yeah yeah, this is true. there are many other better reasons for a road trip.

whiskey

a good single malt scotch

hard to find parts

....

from DC, i drove four hours one way just for some Smithfield BBQ....
sometimes i don't think i'm right in the head...
