It's time to try a new carb

Well, I've been running the good ole' Weber 38 DGAS for almost 3 years now. I am looking at swapping over to a holley. Has anyone got any recommendations on what size holley 2 bbl I should go with?

Howdy Strat:

The most commonly used Holley wide based two barrels are either the 2300 series 350 cfm (List #7448) or the 500 cfm (list #4412). Either can be made to work well for you. With your 200 and set up the 350 may be a little easier to fine tune.

wsa111 is the authority on getting the 2300s profiled to meet our engine needs. He will likely be along in a bit, but while you're waiting do a search for his past posts on the Holleys. He has the advantage of a rather sophisticated air/fuel ratio analyser to assess and make tuning changes

I just put my #4412 on my modified 250, in place of an Autolite 2100 1.08, and am already impressed with the results. I still have some linkage refinements to finish, then I'll be testing with a G Tech accelerometer. But, my butt meter already likes the difference.

We are both working with direct mounting the carbs to a log head. I'm guessing that the Oz head, with its huge ports may be somewhat different in tune, but you will get some ideas from William's experiences.

Good luck and keep us posted.

David,

Thank you for your help. I just spoke to the tech that was fine tunning my carb and he said the problem (Ran terrible) I was having was due to the advance not working on my dizzy. I mentioned to him about the DUI dizzy and he sounded very impressed. I would love to get my hands on one of AZ coupe's alu heads and run a throttle body injection system on it. I would appreciate any future suggestions and comments.

What distributor are you currently running with the PetroniX???

The DUI units are nice. I know it doesn't effect performance, but wrapping the distributor cap, coil and module all in one package sure eliminates alot of clutter.

Stay in touch.

I am running a checker re-man dizzy. I am not sure if it is only a vacuum advance or if it is a vacuum/mechanical advance. The pertronix took a dump on me and the replacement one never worked for me so I am running points for now.

Just curious, why are you ditching the 38 DGAS?

Howdy Back Ted:

If you remove the distributor cap and can see two small springs fairly close to each other, you have a Load-a-Matic, vacuum only, distributor. It is designed to function correctly with a Spark Control Valve in the stock Autolite carb. Without the SCV the carb will not send the correct vacuum signal to the advance in the distributor.

If your distributor has a nut on the outer end of the vacuum cannister, you have a '68 and later point distributer with vacuum and centrifugal advance. The vacuum is designed to work on a ported vacuum signal from the carb.

You might want to get your distributor choice coordinated with your Weber before you decide to change. The Weber will have a ported vacuum source for the later distributor.

The Weber will also work with DUI or a '76 and later Dura Spark II electronic ignition system.

Keep us posted on your progress and thoughts.

Michael,

Well, There isn't anything wrong with the carb itself. I do not know how to properly tune this carb. I'm having a hard time finding anyone who can properly tune this carb. So I could keep nursing it along or get a carb that is tried and true. I'll probably look at replacing it later this summer. A lot depends on if and when I can get my hands on AZ Coupe's alu. head.

David, I am currently finishing my basement. As I find the time and funds to work on my car I will keep everyone posted.
Best wishes
Ted
