What is it? I need a laymans definition, please. Do I need it for my 351W project? Does my L6 have one? It's not going into a race car. 8) Just curious.

Kickdown linkage is what makes you car "kick down" or shift down to the next lower gear so you can pass or reall accelerate. Depending om what carb you have, it could be a setup of about 4 rods or a single long rod if you have a aftermarket carb.. Yes you need it

The 6 Cylinder kick down linkage on a 65 Stang consists of a "Kick down bar" that is attached to the stock gas pedal bar that runs from the gas pedal, through the fire wall to the carb. This "kick down bar" has a wire lead connected to it that is threaded on one end and has a connection point on the other. The connection point is attached to the kickdown lever on the transmission, the threaded end is connected to a fitting, and these two items are adjusted to help determine when the transmission is actually "kicked down" into the passing gear.

This is an over simplification, but I hope it helps.

Kurt.

You know I swear when I pulled the engine and pedal out of my 65 Mustang that there was no such lever in there?

I had the pedal rod which pulled the carb throttle down. But that was it... the only thing I pulled off the Tranny was the shifter and Vac lines... there was no lever on the accel. I also never had a shift down at all? If I floored the engine it merely reved and bogged down.

Might explain a few things.... can the car be run without one?

I know EXACTLY what you are talking about now Fixastang. I see the cable and the accelerator rod attachment.

Jimbo65, yes you need that cable or you will never down shift when you hit the accelerator pedal.

I really never thought about it before until recently when I was flushing the transmission and adjusting my accelerator pedal.

I also have a 351W that I am going to be putting in another car and didn't know if I needed that cable or not. Basically, I didn't know what it was.

8) with a C4 or C6 tranny you dont need the kickdown cable or rod depending on the application, but if you want the tranny to automatically down shift when you stab the throttle, then you do need it. if you decide to use an aod you best hook it up or you WILL burn up the tranny. i believe the fmx is the same as the aod but i am not sure.

:D One definitily does not need the automatic kickdown, Just manualy put it down a gear if you want to step on it or pass, preferebly via a ratchet shifter and maybe a nice B&M shift kit to quicken up the shifts. On my car the kick down was so picky i lost full throttle capabilities on my weber DGV if the kickdown was hooked up so it functioned. If i were you i'd leave it off
