kill switch wiring?

Hey all,

Got my hands on a little switch by flaming river. I wanted to use it as a kill switch for the ignition. I have pertronix II installed with a relay kit. What I'm thinking about doing is taking the constant 12V source for the relay that is connected to the + battery terminal and using that to the switch. Can I break the wire, run one from the battery to the switch, and the other from the switch to the relay? Does this make sense to do?

Thanks

Yes you could do that if the switch is rated to handle that amount of load (Amps). If it's not then you could use it to switch the relay's trigger wire (that is a lower load)

LOL :hmmm: Yep for sure you could turn everything off with one of those. I guess your description through me, a "little switch"

Battery cut offs usually are wired from battery to switch and from switch to starter sol. this cuts power to everything in the car. If you need power for a clock in a radio or other you could run a separate smaller circuit from battery to power that. A simple ignition Kill switch can be a little toggle switch (hidden) breaking the current to coil so it won't fire, you could also do it to the starter sol. so engine won't turn over, a way of locking the hood also so it can't be hot wired is good second defense.

So If I were to use the posted switch I would have to use battery cables. thatd make dash mounting a pain for thick wires. thats why I was wondering if I could it from the relay power source

Well sure you can use smaller wire going to that switch and it's going to work, but the switch is a bit overkill for that purpose.

So it will work if I place it from the 12v source that goes from the battery to the relay usimg smaller wires?

Sweet. Sorry just kinda paranoid when it comes to this. And I feel more ok.cutting the smaller relay wires than the larger battery wires

.. on the topic:
I wanted to use it as a kill switch for the ignition..
as mentioned, you can simply remove power to the ignition to kill engine, prevent theft or tampering, a safety kill switch or disconnect switch needs to disconnect all power and shut down ignition system.

( NHRA track rules require a disconnect on the rear of vehicle for safety, Ford charging system allows the car to run with battery disconnected and needs a (big) two-pole switch to disconnect battery and the Field Coil of the alternator to kill the engine )

have fun

. . .
not exactly tamper resistant though 8) :

or does it make more sense to wire to the wire that comes from the relay to the resistor wire? maybe this is what you were saying earlier. I just remembered when setting up the relay that a wire went to the wire so it was only on when the key was turned. Would that be a better way to go?
