I have read some posts about swapping a 200 into a 170 but if I have a 65 mustang convertible and want to put in a 78-79 200,would this be an exact fit or will it need mods.

Thanks

Ponyman

I'd say it fits right away as 78-79 there was D8 block with a high mount starter just like the 60's blocks. Note that oil dipstick is in the rear in D8 so you'll need to move the dipstick's tube to front location.

I am doing the same thing next week

d8 block (was from a granada so front sump already) c7 head (came with the motor) bolted to a c7 bell with plate for a t5. got it all bolted together in the garage right now test fitting it all together and will be dropping it in on tuesday I hope. just make sure you get a high mount starter

Ponyman,

Ther are lots of Ford variations.

My stock D8 block came with a stock D7 head from a '78 Fairmont and the oil pan, water pump, etc had to be swapped.

You'll know your variation for sure when you compare the oil pans. Play CSI and take a flashlight out and look carefully at your pan and starter location. Then look at your donor engine. The Fairmont pan has two sumps, like an upside down "u" except one sump is a little smaller... the pan you need/have on your Mustang is a single sump.

The high mount starter 200 has the starter completely above the oil pan/block seam. The low mount is completely below th OP/B seam. Again using your CSI flashlight check out the location of the starter on your Mustang and then the donor engine.

Do you ever wonder why on CSI they don't just turn on the lights?

Good Luck

I swapped a 78 motor into my 66 and there are a few things you will have to change....

A 78 motor had a ton of emissions stuff on it and should also have a air pump. The easiest thing to do is to set the 2 motors side by side until your 78 motor looks like the 65 motor

I removed all the emissions junk (including the air pump) egr valve, thermostat housing, plus some assorted brackets and the kick down linkage & brackets. Most of the newer motors used a rear sump pan where the Mustang uses a front sump pan.

You will have to reuse your 65 front sump oil pan & pickup tube & change the dipstick mounting location to the front position in the side of the block. You can plug off the old position with a piece of dowel rod.

A later style water pump will have a longer snout than the 65 pump so you will probably want to swap the water pumps and pulleys, brackets, etc. I used the later pump & dual pulley setup, but I'm running an electric fan. You might or might not have clearance issues with the later pump.

Also use your original thermostat housing in place of the newer one. The newer one has some emissions stuff on it.

The 78 head should have an egr valve mounted on the side of it. Remove it and cover up the holes with a steel or alumiunum blcok off plate. Use your original carb! The later model carbs are loaded with emmisions stuf and should be thrown in the trash!

Likewise toss the later model exhaust manifold in the trash and use your 65 one. The 78 motor will have a duraspark distributor. It can be rewired to run on your 65 or you can stay with your stock distributor. The Duraspark is a great upgrade though!

Use your 65 sending units.

Thats all I can think of right now!

Doug

Just bought a 66 Bronco and someone has swaped in a 200 auto engine.
The problem is they hammered the oil pan to clear front pumpkin.
My question is what rear sump pan would fit this engine?

Did you buy the one at Naples? There is a TwinCreek near there. Just curious because if so I think we may know each other.

No central Kentucky. Just need to get it running and decide if want this engine or maybe a 250 six.

Reckon there is more than one place called TwinCreek. There is a very nice 1966 Bronco for sale at Naples, Idaho but the price is far above my meager means. Sorry I can't help on the oil pan question as I have yet to own a small Ford six.

Would that be a double sump pan like in a 5.0 late mustang?
Would it clear the front diff.?

The Fox 200 pan has a mini hump in the front but it would be a lot smaller than the early front sump pan. If you can, get the pick up tube with the pan, you'll need it.

Man I would love to have an original 60's Bronco that hasn't been all cut up for big fender wells. Those stock Bronco's were sweet.

Found this 66 in a barn, some rust on inner fenders, rockers and front floor but pretty solid with no dents or cutting. Just got it so don't know about it yet. Would like to get it going by summer and take it out west to the desert behind the rv.
