Just put my new engine in 2 weeks ago. It has about 150 miles on it since then. Everything in the engine is new including the valvetrain which I got from FSPP. My engine has been running pretty well except for a small clicking under my valve cover. I pulled my valve cover off to readjust the valves and I seem to have a bad lifter on the #1 exhaust cylinder. What would be causing a liffter to be going out this soon?

Engine info:
67 block all rebuilt.
D264/272 cam, matching lifters, new valve springs, new valves and valve guides.

Possible defective from the factory or it just stuck. Maybe not not getting any oil. This would cause it to loose it's prime. Check the push rod to make sure it is not bent, oil pressure.

Lifter may have trash in it, you could try a can of Seafoam or Marvel to loosen it up.

Are you sure you don't have any piston to valve clearence problems? My 289 was making ticking noises right after it was put together. I had heads with larger valves but didn't get the valve reliefs enlarge so the valves where hitting the piston just on the top side of the valve relief. Trashed all kinds of stuff, valve guides, lifters, cam. Who knows what else.. Not trying to scare you...

I checked the PV clearance before I installed the engine, plenty of clearance there. I guess I will try a new set of lifters, flush out the oil passages and see if that does it.

Do you have to break in new lifters like a cam or are they ready to go?

If you're going to pop the lid off, measure your cam lift while there (drop a solid lifter in the hole to do so). I would break in new lifters myself, but it may not be necessary as for a cam.

Regards, Adam.

I've always been told to break in new lifters the same way you would break in a new cam. You would still need to create a ware patteren on the new set of lifters before any amount of driving. Run the motor a 2000 rpm for about 20 minutes, change the oil after type of thing.

Do you have roller rockers?? If so, check the clearance between the rocker arms and the baffles in the valve cover.

I have ran 4 different valve covers with my roller rockers and they all hit the bottom of the baffle. Physically remove the cover and fire the engine up to see if the noise is still there or not.

If its gone, use a ball pein hammer to dimple the bottom of the baffle where the rocker arm is hitting it.

If you dont have roller rockers, direguard this post! :D :D :D

Later,

Doug

I do have roller tip rockers, but the noise gets louder after I take the valve cover off. There is no sign of it hitting the valve cover. When I start the engine after it has been sitting for a while that lifter knocks pretty loud untill oil gets to it, then its not as loud. I can push down on the pushrod side of the rocker when the engine is running and it will bottom out the lifter and start knocking again. The other lifters don't bottom out as easy when the engine is running.

First whats your engine oil pressure? Since you have it narrowed down to a perticuliar lifter you might have just a defective lifter. Just make sure it is with this lifter only, otherwise you may have an oil supply problem to the lifter galley?? Let us know William

My oil pressure is running about 55psi at high way speed and a little over 30psi idling. I do know I am getting oil to the lifter because it does quiet down some as soon as the oil pressure comes up when I start the engine.

Will this cause permanate damage to my cam if I do drive it to work and back untill I get new lifters? 1 or 2 days 5 miles a day.
