I have a 66 coupe, 200ci motor, 3 spd manual tranny,,,,,I'm trying to find a book that will explain what needs to be done to be completely numbers matching, things to watch out for, the correct look and "feel" of things and such

can anyone recomend a book or books or magazine for proper restoration?

thanks

Most people who build 'numbers matching' when related to Ford are really 'closely manufactured'. Meaning that the engine components should have the correct casting numbers and that the dates in the cast parts should be BEFORE the build date of the body.

I don't know for sure, but I'd think your best bet is going to be joining the Mustang Club of America (MCA) and talking with a show judge if you really want to a paint daub correct restoration.

There are some on here that will give you hints and tips on the proper paint colors and stripes on parts if you have specific questions but to nail down everything I am afraid you are going to have to talk to somebody from the MCA..

+1 to coupeboy's comments.

With Ford, "numbers matching" doesn't mean nearly what it does with other makes, as Ford didn't stamp or cast full or partial VINs on driveline parts, only casting numbers and maybe date codes.

I know this to be true, but... for some reason both the engine and transmission on my '68 Mustang have the VIN stamped into them. It must have been from getting rebuilt at some point in time? Its weird..

As for books there are many on Restoring Mustangs.

http://www.amazon.com/Restore-your-Ford ... MAG2P7R018

Restored some numbers matching Model A's in the past and also worked at a Ford assembly plant. The key to having a numbers matching car is in decoding of the Vin Number, the Door tag, Body buck tag and as was stated in above posts looking for the casting date codes. And if your real lucky and find a build sheet you will be able to determinate if the car is still has the original parts. Good luck in your Mustang restoration
