Does anyone have any idea on how high those adapter plates are. i still have like 1 1/2" clearance from the carb to the hood. but i dont think that will be enough for the carb and air cleaner. does anyone have any suggestions for getting more clearance? also i have like 1-1 1/2" of play turning left or right, and i was wondering what the problem could be. i think it might be the idler arm or the steering box. (thats pretty much all it could be) i dont know how to tell which one i need or if i need both. is there a way to tell if i need a new steering box? also how hard would it be to install myself?? thanks

You have to get a drop base air cleaner for a holley carb or a lo pro 1 1/2 high cleaner for a weber. as far as the steering box the lash could be way out of adjustment or your idler arm can be gone. We are in so -cal id be glad to check it out for you and point you in the right direction.

I think read in Mustangs Plus catalog to check idler arm
You grab ider arm and try to move it up and down
and side to side there should a little give but not alot of movement.
Thre also said to check bushing for wear and play.
The bushing are supposed wear out before the idler arm.
The on center play sounds excessive, I can assume the steering floats
on the highway . I just replaced my steering on box with a Flaming river box.
I noticed with the new box, the steering doesn't vibrate and shake as much.
When i took the old box out I could spin sector shaft by hand.
On the new box I could barely turn the shaft.
Installing a new box is pretty easy because you more room with the six cylinder.
On your Mustang the sector shaft connects to the steering box with a rag joint.
My 67 shaft was one piece 51 inches long your shorter shaft makes easier to
pull the box out.

I found this short *cough* article in one of my restoration books
Adjust your Steering Box

It says you can adjust it while in the car, so long as you can find an inch/lb beam type torque wrench (I couldnt unless I wanted to order one)
