Hey guy
i want to lower my XF Fairmont
it got 3 month old low king springs but they just aint low enought just i want them to low as the super low king springs

so i though about cutting a bit off the springs.

What do you guys think

Ill also put packers under the shocks to rais the shocks so they don't bottem out and break and ive heard about there are clip or something that you can get to hold the end of the spring to it dosen't move

If you got any idea plz tell

also from what ive herd you can cut king springs to a certant point but don't know if it true or not

ow before you hit me up for buy the wrong springs i neve got them they cam with the car when i bought it last month the original owner put them in and ended up not needing the car and cost to much run for his budget.

OK for starters, cutting them is ILLEGAL, but having said that take 1/2 to 3/4 of a coil off with a quick cut. Make sure you use a cutting disc on your angle grinder or you will be there forever which will overheat the coil.

Yer well ive go no money to left to spend on that i spent it all on the motor, exhaust and 5L on metallic paints and 4l on clear for the body

plus the springs are just brand new it like a waist and you will never get any money back on them

Honesly why would it be dangerious then you cut it down to match the original shape on the end then clamp it to your car body and raise the shocks and they wouldn't be lose and all they wouldn't even move and they would look just like the super low kings just get a bit of yellow paint and spray the ends about 6 time so paint don't rub off scratch to easy and if you ever got pulled over police wouldn't know if they were cut off. They would have to pull them out and measure them but you just say you got super low kings before they even think of dismantaling your car LOL

So how much is the fine for cutting your springs i think ill have to save up to do it hay or put a cow in the back of my car for a week to sag the springs then sit on on my motor for a week and she will be super low

LMAO i like that idea

Ill have a talk with the department of transport about this just ask
there well secure with spring clips and the shocks have been raised so they won't break and they will hold the wheel the the car lol

that seem safe dosen't it?

Try cutting ½ turn on the fronts, and put them back in to see. Remember you need to do both sides to appreciate the result. Use the correct type of cutting disc, and eye/ear protection. The remaining heat from cutting will bake on a quick coat of paint nicely. Spray some paint inside the cap, dip in your finger and dab it on the cut spring end. You will need a full alignment after re-lowering.

Cutting springs is illegal.. BUT.. AS long as the spring is still captive i carnt se a problem , when you cut the springs all u do is increase the tension.... You end up with a shorter stiffer spring..

cutting the springs will increase the spring rate and alter the handling charateristics of the car. remember these are lowered springs, so already have a higher than stock spring rate, if you shorten the springs to much you may place more load on the suspension than it can handle possibly resulting in failed suspensions components.

you also need to consider the reduction in suspension travel. This can be very dangerous. at the very least you need to shorten the bumpstops the same amount as the springs.

Say there's 7½ turns in total. Ignore one full turn at each end as they are "dead". That gives 5½ active coils.

Cut one half coil and you have added about 11% to the stiffness.
Cut one full coil and it's now about 22% stiffer.

Something to think about. This is actually taking you further away from performance motoring and closer to ricing your ride. A competitive suspension is reactive; the springs compress to take up the movement, and the shockies stop any bounce. Good shocks are really important.

Why not buy some factory V-8 Fairlane springs from a wrecker, and trim them? It will not become as harsh, because the spring is a little softer to start with (thinner spring wire). If they work, paint 'em nicely and sell the King pieces. Buy a 1" front anti-roll bar and a 5/8" rear one, to install.

Just some food for thought.

i can see your point, a lowered ride looks sweet as but really dude cutting springs can be bad! I did it once to my EB falcon and what was a good idea turned out a disaster! 1 front srping ended up breaking, had to replace all the shocks and springs, tyres wore out quicker even tho i had the alignment etc done but they could not get it right. Cops haselled me and had to sweet talk my way out of numerous defects, only getting the one.

With the XA i wasnt taking the risk, went to pedders, spent $2500 on all new everything and best money ive spent.....brand new everything, not stupidly low, cops dont bother me and nice and legal....think about it, defects add up after a while

A point that I have made on a different forum.
Pedders will guarantee that your car will leave their workshop at the ride height that YOU specify. How do they do it? They install the springs. bounce the car. Check the height and if it isn't right, they take the suckers off, trim them and then reinstall. They will keep trimming until the height is right. BUT, every store will deny it.

today i pick up new rear Monroe heavy duty shocks for my xf an they were only $20 plus postage now that what you call a steal

im going to put new bushes in the front and rear of the car also new bearing im doing EVERYTHING to the wheels before he tutches the road i want a smooth and problem free when she on the road no steering problem no nothing

i got new inner and outer bearing + bearing seal hehe that the front done just need the front suspention kit with all new arms and ball joing etc then front done :D then the rear and then this lowering problem

Do NOT use polyurethane radius rod bushes. I did, and they split into many many pieces within a few weeks. Also do not use polyurethane for the lower control arm inner bushes. You are better to replace the whole arm if the bush is flogged out.

Use Castrol GRR (dark red colour) rubber grease on the rubber bushings, and Castrol APXT (rich blue) on the polyurethane bushes. You can use the sachets of poly grease that come with some bushings, but not on rubber. Moly grease (Castrol LMM) also works on polyurethane. These three products will see you through almost any lubrication need other than oil or ATF.

No, you are not forced to use Castrol, but it's widely available, cheap enough, and the various recommendations I put here are from their tech line. I didn't just dream it up.

Out of curiosity, what did the bearings cost you? About $60 for the two sides, plus fitting?

xdee, the pedders i took the xa to, i made it clear wat i wanted and there was no spring cutting to be done in my car. If they tried it they knew from the start i dont take shit and after forking out $2500, they did a bit of arse kissing too hehe

Dave, the point I'm trying to make is that there is nothing wrong with cutting them, if it's done properly. Pedders do a fantastic job and I'm not slating them either, just saying how it is.

the reason i want to replace them or just fix them is there like 18 years old still with originals and there up for replacement and the arms seem to be great and all just the bushes on the cars have warn out with age there all cracked and hard with mother natures evil tricks on the car saying see don't want cars. lol
i found a kit on ebay for 179 and it has all the front supention arms and ball joints for power steering cars

they might be V8 springs but they will Never sag with a 6 cylinder in there
also i can test my 351 in there for my XY GT shell MUHahahaha

i found some rear springs

sounds like an ideahttp://cgi.ebay.com.au/LOWERED-FRON...9376QQcategoryZ102352QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem
i think i can trust these springs there lovells that my last name LMAO

Sound a bit weird when mates ask what springs i got umm lovells in the back and kings front LMAO
they both drop the car about 40-50mm so that would be nice

love bigs car runnning around on there guts

im going to put air shocks in the car just for them the drive-ways pump pump pump broom let them back down lmao

ill need some lines running off all 4 shocks running into boot or somewhere with a 12v pump and i just press a button the start pumping the shocks to lift her and button the release air that would be wicked shit :D
hmm i might do something like that

so what you guys think just use one of them supercheap auto $20 pumps on it or just like pump per a shock lmao wicked idea it is

Maybe a bike pump for the air shockies? Maybe get rid of all the coil springs and go air springs off a bus. Then you can ride on the bump stops.

Mate, I think you should seriously talk to someone and get some good first hand advice.

is that about the shocks, springs or arms and all

i have a slight hunch that your talking about the shock idea

Maybe a bike pump for the air shockies? Maybe get rid of all the coil springs and go air springs off a bus. Then you can ride on the bump stops.
bike pump? you better not be talking about man power one lol all the man power i want to you to raise my car that 5-7cm to get up steep drive ways is a button lmao

yer love the with bus air springs but i want a under 10second car not a 20+ with all that gear in my boot

LMAO[/url]

i lowered my xf ute 2.5 inches by cutting the springs and putting lowereing blocks in the back, it was a cheap process. the ute now looks tough but is a bit impractical i cant jump kerbs like i used to and i cant take it for circlework on my farm and i cant load it up with as much weight anymore.
If your going to put a $1000+ exhaust system on it id think long and hard about how low you want it, nothing makes me laugh more than seeing hoons in there commodores doing laps at the beach, gassing it, only to come to a crawl to get over speed bumps without scratching there precious underbodys...
