machinist raises ?'s which make me ??(long)

Seems I never can find one machinist that can do it all. I located another guy here who says he can do all that I want but take down the log for the 2 barrel upgrade. He began by just looking over my head and then he say's "those intake holes and seats have hit their limit!". Then I respond, how so? Well whoever has been workin' on that head didn't leave any valve seats to work with---those things are huge. Then I said, no one has touched those seats that I know of, if they did it was not because I told them too. I didn't tell him I have 3 other heads just like it and they all look the same at the seats. He goes on to say "I would be very surprised if they did'nt cut into the water jacket opening those up. I would recommend a 30 dollar pressure test before I did anything. Then I told him that I had a guy magnaflux and pressure test it already and they didn't find a thing wrong with it. Well, are you sure they pressure tested it?? I then said, look the hot tank was down so they cleaned it up the best they could with what appears to be some type brass/bronze medium and then they magnafluxed and pressure tested it. Well magnafluxing it doesn't mean nothing, you better be sure they pressure tested it.
Then he says at any rate if I was to do what you want I would just take those hardened seats out of the intake ports and leave your exhaust seats and clean'em up a bit. At this point I asked him what the charge would be for doing all but the log opening. He then gives me a quote of $180.00 for milling .015, putting in my teflon valve seals, cleaning up and taking out my valve seats, 3 angle valve job and putting the whole thing together. Then he tells me my 351 windsor valve springs (exh.) are too much, then I tell him they are 200 open and 80 closed, yea he says that is pretty stout but 80 closed ain't too bad. Finally I tell him about the cam I am going to use and then he backs off a little, saying yea, that's a pretty stout little cam for this six, probably will handle that spring...Now after all this I am a little suspicious of what this guy actually knows and doesn't know, I have a stock '78 head--looks just like the others I have in my garage---his price is fine, no question that $180 bucks with the pressure check is a good deal. My question is do any of you think I should trust this guy with my head, I have already cleaned up the chambers and ported???

Sounds like he just wants to do what he knows how to do. I would move on, especially if you've already had the head done. Maybe he has never even worked on one of these before?

Price is good, guy sounds like he doesnt know what hes doin as far as your head is concerned. I lucked out and found a guy who knew his stuff, helped me out alot, but he also said he couldnt mill the intake for direct mount

I would like to hear from others, but in essence I have to agree with you the guy was nice enough and the price was right but I have a feeling he has limited knowledge with these heads.

By the way 66sprint6 I see you are using the 2300 (500cfm) carb. Do you like it and did you ever find someone to mill your log or did you just go the adaptor route.

Price is right, I think the guy is just trying to get more business. Maybe its slow there, so hes trying to get as many jobs in to fill in the voids. Seen it before.

Is this fellow offering what you want? You don't convey the impression he is.

Trust me - unless you have a loaded gun and are willing to use it, don't make a tradesman do something he doesn't want to. The results are so seldom gratifying.

Essentially, hes trying to make a sale, and add add-ons. Tell him what YOU want, and if hes too forceful, just argue with him and go elsewhere. Still a good price.

Seats rarely go through to the waterjackets. If the valves are recessed in the head while they sit flat in the seats, then you have seat issues.

Tell him for that price youd like them lapped too, since youll need that anyway for a proper 3 angle. Thats a REQUIREMENT. Then tell him you want to see the lap job (how the valve sits on the seat) and the three angle before he assembles it.

Sounds like hes a bit pushy. Make your demands, since hes so gd demanding. This is YOUR car and engine.

Well, I took my head to "my old machinist" and man he came through for me again. I asked him to mill my log and he did a downright fabulous job of it. Took it in early this morning on my way to work and he called at 10am and told me I could pick it up. He wanted $70 bucks so I gave him $80 for the great job. Unfortunately this guy knows little about head work but does exactly what I ask. You have to catch him early while he's still taking his morning wakeup drink, if you know what I mean. By the time he called me at 10 you could hear a little too much cheer in his voice.

There's a place here called blue chip motors and they will do heads or sell you one already completed..I am going to call them tomorrow and see what price they will do the milling, valve job and teflon seals. I believe these guys have been around awhile and have pretty good experience with heads.

That first guy used the word "stout" too much. Anyone who applies a word like that for just about everything is to be avoided
