making my own muffler

well, not a muffler, more of a resonator. but here's what I'm going to do. take 3" exh pipe ( 12" ) and 2 3"- 2.5" ID connectors, then take a length of 2.5" OD pipe, with holes drilled in it, and slide it right thru the 3" and weld everything up. Glasspack without the glass really

I think you have a great idea.

However, glasspacks are only $20 and you can turn the muffler so the internal perforated openings are facing away from the exhaust flow.

Just a thought

Post pix as you go, Id like to see your homegrown muffler/resonator.

just as long as it doesnt look like a tin can...remember that post?

I think that the more volume you havethe better it works. It will be interesting to see how much it actually dampens the sound. You mighttry a 4 inch pipe for more volume. Does anyone know of a material that could be sprayed on the iterior parts to reduce the sound?

well, I just picked up the muffler parts. $51 worth of exhaust peices from carquest ( 2.5" and 3" stuff is expensive ). it took a matter of seconds to put the outer shell togther it's only 3 peices a 3" id/ id connector ( 12" long, has 2 flared out ends to 3" ID ) and 2 3" OD-2.5" ID connectors in which the center 2.5" pipe will slide right into, I first have to drill a number of holes ( 6 rows of 5/16" maby 1" spacing ) in the center pipe first b4 I slide it in, and weld it up. I'll post pics.

i can tell you it will be very loud... but nice, i built one almost identical to that for a forklift at work, it does sound pretty cool though because it has a flat-head inline6 :D

I wasn't there when my mom picked the parts up ( figured it all out the day b4 and ordered everything ) and she dropped the parts off at my h/s autoshop class, and kept the bill with her, I tally'd everything up after I came home. yeah, it is an expensive muffler but, it will be custom at least. I coulda taken a Thrush magnum glasspack and thrown it in our garbage incinerator with some motor oil and had the same result but... this is a little cleaner than that.

Why would you do that?

it would burn the fiberglass packing out of it, same thing as what people used to do, and soak them in oil and run them, when the smoke cleared, they were a lot louder.

personally, I don't mind the $51 price tag I paid for the parts. it will give me somthing to do, and I can have it any way I want, drill holes in a spiral or big/ little holes, all will change the sound diffrently.

Why on earth would you spend 50$ in parts to build something you can buy for 20?

We love the inlines, it's a little late for logic.

If I can build something that is twice is expensive and almost as good as the part from the shop, I'll go for it! But then again, I have an incurable case of inline fever.... :)

if you are going to a turbo why run a muffler?

I always got really good sound by using a pair of large long tips (like 2.5" - 3" straight tips) about 24" long or so. give a nice low rumble at idle,

I just didn't want the tractor like sound. I kno it dosn't need a muffler, but really what I'm making isn't a muffler, just more of a resonator. just want to alter the sound a bit from that of what an open exhaust with no muffler would sound like

I understand what would happen if you throw a glasspack in the incenerator.

Most people like to warm up their new exhaust and shoot water up the tail pipe to do the same.

Just never made sense to me why anyone would do that, no performance gain, so whats the point, ya want loud, dont put a muffler on it? :D

I understand wanting control over the design but there is science behind exhaust sound, way beyond my understand, good luck though.

I will look for a video, as Id like to hear it when your done.

yeah, I'll have a few video's.

Why would you do it? Because you like to do things yourself and experimenting is half the fun. If it was all about buying something off of the shelf, you could go buy a new car or get something with chevy v8.

It still amazes me to see people ask "why would you do that" on this board :P

why, cause we're all nuts, that's we we are taking a tractor engine and trying to make them fast!
