Mechanical advance

Another poll...how many of you who use DSII distributors took the time to change the mechanical advance springs or settings? If yes or no, what were the results?

Harry

I see no poll. :?

I haven't started fooling with the DS II or HW 5200 yet. My primary goal is to cruise @ 75-80 MPH around my engine's peak torque, thereby achieving best MPG on road trips.

PS: Nebraska speed limit is 75 MPH, and traffic moves at about 80 MPH. :D In Missouri (Western) the speed limit is 70 MPH, and traffic movews +/- 75-80. In Southeast MO, it moves @ 80-90.

I changed ours! But the opposite of norm.

Welded up the "slots" so it'll only adv. 10 degrees.
Totally took off the vacuum adv.
Then pulled more timing with a MSD BTM.

Works very well in or out of boost.

Harry, i don't know the difference because i did the mechanical advance curve before i ran the distributor.

Anybody who does not have the dizzy curved to your application is giving away fuel miliage & power. Bill

Howdy Harry and all:

I ran a DS II stock and recurved. I could tell a slight difference off the line and in the mid range.

Adios, David

Yeah, I guess didn't set the poll up right! Guess I'll try it again later after I read about how to post a poll.

I took my DSII apart today. I have the 10/13 slots in mine. I picked up a Mr. Gasket recurve kit at the parts store today. I'll put the two weak springs in. The tab is in the 10 slot already. I'm following the "How To" directions from the sticky listing. I expect it will help.

The DSII I have is a reman for a '78 fairmont, single advance, six cyl.

OK, one thread "how to" said to use two. Bend the 'tabs' to make sure the advance pulls back OK. Right?

Bigger question...For a 200 with a 264 cam, what degree of mechanical advance should I shoot for? with lest say..8* initial and 26* mechanical would equal 34* total. I think this should be pretty close considering the higher compression from the milled head.

Harry

Scott at reincarnation figures 36-38 degrees overall. 13 slot with 12 degrees of mechanical is what I started with and it seems to work well. If you can get the distributor to come all in at 2800 according to Scott, that would be ideal.

I also installed the Mr Gasket springs, I tried it both ways with 1 and then with 2 springs, I also have the dizzy with 10 and 13 degree slots, and I have it set at 10. I also bought a new dizzy and it has a 13 and 18 degree slots and the regular springs, set at 13. My initial is set at 10* and I have played with it extensively, changind from 5* up to 12*. I can tell you that I cannot tell any difference with either Dizzies and any of the spring sets. I still had a slight pinging under acceleration, I installed NGK colder plugs and it helped. I have checked the timing with an advance light and it looks like I have 30* all in at 3000 rpm's. I can't get more than that due to detonation. And thats with 93 octane.

maybe a silly question, but i searched and did not find the sticky. where is it? thanks.

It has been quite a while since I did my advance mods. After having had some problems I finally put the original springs back in. I'm getting better results now, I no longer think messing with the curve is a good idea for a daily driver.

Look in the top post in the forum, and it is in there. Something about "Better fuel economy with the DS2".

Thanks!
