Hi,
I would like to thank everyone for helping with my electronic ignition questions. I have several more questions concerning ignition.
I have decided to go with a Pertronix setup and a Flamethrower coil. I have been reading much literature regarding Pertronix and Duraspark and I have decided that with my limited knowledge and experience concerning ignition systems I should go with the easier setup.
My questions:
Where do I buy new points? I want to replace the old points so I have a backup should the alternative ignition setup fail. Must I physically remove the points from the distributor in order to install the Pertronix equipment and just keep the points in the car somewhere? Is there a specific tool used to measure the points gap that I must purchase somewhere?
What kind of spark plugs should I consider? Can I just purchase some generic spark plugs or is there a specific kind that some of you I6'ers prefer to use? Is .54 the right gap measurement that I want for the plugs?
Spark plug wires? In my other post, someone suggested 7mm Bosch wires. Will these wires be compatible with a Pertronix/Flamethrower coil setup?
My shopping list:
Pertronix Ignitor
Flamethrower 40,000v coil (oil filled)
Spark Plugs
Spark Plug Wires
New Points (where do I purchase them?)
Am I missing anything?
One more query:
When looking at Pertronix Ignitor units I am confused as to which one to purchase. I have a 1968 200ci I6 in my 1965 Mustang. On one website the units available are:
65-73 EIS-1266 6 cyl, w/o smog pump
65-73 EIS-1281 8 cyl., single point
65-73 EIS-1281D 8 cyl., dual points
65-73 EIS-1281DV 8 cyl., dual points w/vac.
66-73 EIS-1261 6 cyl, w/smog pump
Which one do I need?
I want to thank anyone who has made it this far into the post. I really appreciate all the help. I am sorry to ask so many questions but I am unsure about much of this and I want to make sure I do it right.
Thanks,
Justin
