I would like to put my 200 on an engine stand to start cleaning it up. The 4 bolts on the back are 3/8-16 (i believe for mounting to transmission) are they strong enough to hold the engine?

Yes, just make sure the block's weigh is centered and your bolts suck it up completely with no space between the back of the block and the engine stand.

Unless you have a vintage or home made stand the 4 bolts are going to be the strongest part. The typical under $100 stands that are out there today are a bit on the squishy side. A 200 short block is fairly stable but after I got the head and accys on I was careful not to get any body parts under the thing. The bell mounts are 3/8-16. Use at least grade 5 or even grade 8's (they dont cost that much more in those sizes). Most of the stands dont come with those and have oversized holes or slots so you will also need a couple of washers. If they are slots get stack of washers with something like a fender washer (small hole large diameter) on the bottom, something in the middle in the middle and a regular size against the head. Make sure you are getting enough threads into the block and that they are not too long so you can get them tight. You may even want to replace or add washers to the slotted brackets on the mounting plate because those also tend to be a bit on the thin side. If any of the stand is put together when you get it take it apart again to make sure things are not cross threaded and everything is tight and lubricated. If you can get a stand that has the drip try that will save you some mess and maybe catch a few parts.

I just rented one for two weeks. If was like $50. Real heavy duty with rubber wheels. Hoist was another $50. Beat the h*ll out of three buddies and a piece of plywood. Jacked up the front end 8" and installed the block hooked to the tranny.

Check out a site like craigs list for your area. Around here there are usually 2 or 3 stands and or hoists for sale cheap. The stands usually go $5-25 and the hoists $25-75. Most 'only used once'.

I got one from a guy who bought from Harbor Freight but never opened it. I payed $25 for it and it has 2 legs on the bottom. This is a better setup than a single one as it stabilizes the stand. Just bolt up the plate, jack up the engine and slide the flange into the stand hole and put in the pin. I just used the old engine bolts but make sure they are tight and there is no play.

Thats what i got. It is a real heavy duty one that i bought used for $30. It is overkill for this engine but it was a good deal. I was just concerned about the 3/8 bolts thats all.
