All Small Six 2 bolt starter swap for 200 w/manual trans

This relates to all small sixes
Hi, did you have any luck with this adapter?
Yes. I made two plastic prototypes and then an aluminum one. I test fit the metal one for fit, pinion depth & position, and everything looks perfect. I'm in the middle of welding new sheet metal in the engine bay (all 6 hood hinge mounting nuts were ripped out and U-nuts had been booger-welded in), but once that's done I will get the engine back together and get some real-world testing done on the starter with the custom adapter plate. Once I'm sure it's perfect and doesn't need any further modification, I will do an initial production run and make them available.

There is one drawback to this setup, and it's price. The Powermaster 9504 is about $230, and the adapters will probably be about $70 each, which means you're looking at about $300 to fit a gear reduction starter to a six.

Funk, there is a cheaper style, Powermaster Power Max Plus. 9104 at $167 instead of the Master Torque 9604 style.
The power max is rated for up to 11 to 1 on V8s and is smaller around but 7.36 long at 7.5 LBS.
The master Torque is rated up to 14 to 1 V8s is bigger around but shorter some, 7.00 long at 10.75 LBS.
I cannot see the need for the extra torque on even the highest comp. high po small six.
I will be using the power max plus on my new build. I as other racers, are at the point, that to cut one pound is now in the hundred's dollar point.
Thought that this info will help people save some money, please do your own due diligence and double check my work.

Here's a good write up on for starters
Thanks for the article. Do you happen to have anything on the 132T flywheel? I have the small pattern 8.5" dog dish.

This exchange below seems to suggest that the starter for the 132T 65 is interchangeable between manual and auto. Anyone have this same experience? I'm planning to get a mini but if this works i can run her sooner with my existing auto starter.

UPDATE
The eBay block plate and the MDL clutch package arrived yesterday in the morning. Both seem like matches! Another very late night in the garage and we installed as far as we could take things. Checked progress on the hydraulic mount, it's not going to be a piece of art but should get the job done! Unfortunately they have my bellhousing and adapter plate for checking dims so we can't just finish the trans install. Told the fabricator it would mean a ton to me and if I can pick up everything today I'd bring him a 6 pack!

Had a minor brake line leak from moving the brake master cylinder for access to the clutch master cylinder. Will bleed them today. I temp installed the trans mount to make sure parking brake would clear. Everything seems good but my parking brake hasn't worked in a while so I need chase that issue.

Big question now is this starter. If I get everything else and the install is smooth, I'm definitely going to be very tempted to bolt on my old automatic starter based on that link above. Trying to find more info. Any input on the matter would be appreciated.

Lots of photos for the next person installing t5 on the small pattern

Thx
B

Here's the fordsix article of that VMF post. https://fordsix.com/threads/65-manual-200-starter-question.77843/?f=1&t=77843#p599686
On comment #14 user said this.

"Well, the new starter (and other parts) arrived from RockAuto, took all of 15 minutes to install, and... starts like a champ now!

For future reference, my block is a L6 '65 which originally had a 2.77 three speed. I ordered the three bolt ACDELCO 3361007 and it worked perfectly with no modifications (even looks like the one I had before)."

Want a mini starter for 170/200/250 Series L6 with 3/4" ring gear offset.

Want a Power master: Get any of these models

Definitely need to check and see which setup you have before deciding on a starter. That Powermaster photo above is a small piece of the whole page, which I included in the first post of this thread. My particular car has the ⅜" offset and 4.130" registry hole, two bolt starter.

@drag-200stang Nice find re: the 9104 starter. I'm sure that's more than enough power for any I6. The only issue for me is that it doesn't use the same "infiniclock" locking ring as the 9504 and 9604, so the adapter I've created won't fit. If I'd found that starter earlier, I might have based my modified adapter ring on its style instead.
