Moving the ignition coil

Has anyone moved their ignition coil form the stock location to somewhere else, say the shock tower or under the export brace? If so, what did you do to increase the primary lead (coil to dizzy wire)?

Also, I currently have a DS II setup with a '76 cap and rotor (looks like a stock '66 setup - nice) but I'm thinking about switching over to the larger cap and rotor. What do I need to do this swap? I'm guessing I'll need new spark plug wires as well, right?

if the original primary lead is too short, buy a longer one, or make one yourself. Al you need is about 2´ of ignition wire, crimp terminals and boots.

to swap the later 75-up 2-piece DSII-cap, you´ll need the cap, cap adaptor, rotor and a set of spark plug wires with boots for a male terminals cap.
both the DS1-cap and breaker point cap have female terminals.

There is definitely a lot of precedence for moving the coil off the engine block.

1) Heat
2) Vibration

Those are the 2 main killers of coils and exactly what you get with a coil mounted on the engine. My Flamethrower coil seems to also cause a lot of arcing to my fuel pump for whatever reason. I've changed the wire 3 times and it keeps happening if my coil-cap wire gets closer then 1/4 inch to the fuel pump filter housing. I'm debating moving mine to the wall behind the shocktower since my MSD is mounted before. I'll just need to cut a new lead wire.

But, most newer cars, you'll notice the coil is mounted on the car frame/body vice the engine block. I'm sure there is a reason for this. Many of the upgraded coils for the older engines are designed for wall mounting vice engine mounting. Again, I'm sure there is a reason for this.

Will we are on the subject of coils. The coil should be mounted straight up instead of an angle like they were originally mounted. Oil filled coils will not last long mounted at an angle and can also blow up.

If to get the MSD Blaster SS coil you really don't need to worry much about vibration, i just installed one those with the DS2 and MSD ignition. everything runs great and runs alot smoother than stock
