MSD 6AL BTM

Just curious as to what other ignition mods people are doing in combination with an MSD install. Distributor modification or anything? Also are you using the MSD in combination with the Duraspark box or just removing it all together? I've got the 6AL BTM with a Blaster 2, and 9mm wires going on and am just looking for pointers. Thanks guys!

sounds like your running what I am, I just disconnected the vacuum advance and am just running mechanical. I never really got on it to see how it was running since the install of the btm, tranny went first =( it will be back soon...ish

I have one on my boat so there was no vacuum to deal with. I am still using the points dizzy with new points. New wires, new plugs gapped at 50, and the blaster coil. I set the dwell on the new points before I hooked up the box. After hooking in the box I found that the timing retarded around 10* from where it was without the box. It started good but just didnt have as much power as it did before the box. After I set the timing back to where it was it seems to start about the same as it used to. Idle is slightly smoother. I have noticed that it will ilde for a long time without getting rough like it used to. Lower to mid power seems a bit more solid.

right now my non running motor has a TFI distributor in it and will be getting its timing comtrol from the EEC4 computer. Will be using a 6btm also (already ahev it)

We've got the a factory Duraspark dizzy fully hooked up to vacuum. I use a one way valve so it only sees vacuum; not boost. 35* total timing under vacuum. Great for the street! Under boost; it only goes to 23*.
We're got the MSD 6AL with the seperate BTM pluged in.
Love it!

Sounds sweet, thanks guys. I'll have mine hooked up here within the next couple of days. Oh, by the way, I still don't have the M90 on, but I think the box should still work without a boost reference. I'll post results.

I got my MSD installed and everything works great, but I have to have the factory DS box hooked up in order for it to run. Does anybody know how I can eliminate that and maybe clean up some of that mess of wires under there? I'm doing a lot of re-arranging and clean up preparing for the M90 install. Thanks.

How have you got it hooked up? You shouldnt need the DS box at all. The orn/pur wires out of the bottom of the DS dizzy go into the box on the one cable (white and purple if memory serves?). The other cable has the power, ground, and the 2 wires that go to the coil. There is a white wire for triggering off points that you dont need. Are you hooking the white wire to the old coil - out of the ds box? I could see it working like that but there shouldnt be any reason to do it that way. That cable for connection to DS that someone else mentioned was to give the right plugs to hook to that 3 pin plug in the dizzy. You wouldnt need the cable, it just gives you the ends to make it cleaner. You could test it by using regular electronic crimp on ends and after its working you could cut the connectors off your old DS module.

I have it hooked up just like this: Red to C+ (Red) on Duraspark Coil Connector and White to Tach (Green) on DS Connector. Everything else where it should be. Other than that it's working great. There is a noticeable gain in throttle response, low and mid range pickup. I am happy with how it's working. Can't wait for my M90 to get out of the shop so that I can finish my fabrication work and get it running.

DO NOT use an MSD 6BTM without a boost reference! I had it hooked up and working awesome, and then I changed things around to use the distributor as the magnetic pickup, and removed the stock DS box. I'm pretty sure my 200 is blown up now from extreme detonation. I haven't taken it apart to see exactly what is wrong with it yet, but it runs like crap and spews coolant out the tail pipe. I could only hope it's a head gasket. I hooked everything back up the way it was, and it runs better, but that isn't saying much. It seems that the DS box has built in ignition curve and some amount of electronic retard so when I removed it the MSD was fully advanced. OOPS!
