Multiple carbs, are they worth it?

I have been seriously considering setting up my 200ci with a tricarb set-up. Probably not the Offy tri-power (but tell me if that is worth it also), I'm gonna try making my own, doesn't seem like it could be THAT difficult (cut a couple holes and fabricate a linkage, it'll be a snap :roll: ) Anyway, I'm interested from hearing from anybody with a muli-carb setup, on whether or not they are as a big a pain the rear as everyone makes them out to be. I don't just want the most reliable setup ever, if that was the case I'd just stick with a single carb, no, I want something cool, but not too detrimental to the reliability and ease of use of my car (a '62 Comet s-22). Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Remeber, I'm for this, I just want to know if I'm gonna regret it if I do it. Thanks.
 
I have tried 3 Autolite 1 bbls (center carb 1.75" bore, 2 end carbs 1.5" bore) on an Offenhauser tripower intake (large log) with progressive linkage. The setup had surprisingly decent idle (through center carb only), good midrange, strongest topend of any carburetor combination I've ever run BY FAR (and I've tried most all the 1 and 2 bbl carbs). Only combination where I felt I could put the pedal to the floor and the engine would rev on the high end until it blew up. Only combination that easily pulled my Mustang to 110+ mph, most others struggled to get to 100 mph. Downside was complexity, constant adjustments, carbs having minor problems (flooding, leaking, etc.). Drove with this on a daily driver for about 3 months, but it was too high maintenance so I eventually removed and sold the head/intake/carbs complete. Perhaps if I could have afforded new carbs all the way around or didn't rely on the car as a daily driver it would have been more managable.
 
Well, my car is a daily driver, maybe not EVERYDAY, I live in Chicago and walk or take the El most everywhere, but often enough where I wouldn't want to fiddle with the thing everytime I needed to get groceries. On the other hand, since driving here is a luxury and I don't NEED my car everyday, maybe I could afford to do a little tuning now and then. Hmmm, still not sure, although now, I think I am leaning towards a nice 2 Bbl. Hell, maybe I'll just get a nice Weber 1 Bbb, and say "screw it" to any kind of meaningful performance gain through carb work. Tri power would be a nice bragging point though.
 
Here's what they looked like when I first put them on- I'd forgotten I first tried with small Holley 1 bbl. carbs on the ends. At this point I still hadn't figured out an air cleaner either.

Well...remember this: Anytime you make a system more complicated, you are increasing the ODDS that something may go wrong.

I ran my Offy for a while as a daily driver. But for 100 miles a day, it was just a little too quirky.

THere a quite a few around here that have had good success with a daily driver set up.

while on the subject are strom's still available or can you find em any where?
 
I was running a pair of Carter YF's for a while then switched to a Holley 2 Bbl. The 2 Bbl is a lot more tuneable and trouble free once you get it set up correctly.

For the "wow" factor at car shows though, nothing beat the multiple carbs!! 8) 8)

Im planing on running tripower. I have the carbs and everything.( im making it home made so i just need the time) All three of the carbs are autolite 1100 off 200ci motors. Im thinkin that is too much carburation. What can i do to lean them out?

Curtis, to control overcarburetion, you need only control the way your other two carbs come on. It's a matter of designing your throttle linkage to be a little adjustable in this aspect. Simple, eh? :wink:
 
Yes and no.

The Offy linkage has adjustability on the outer carbs. Problem is, that you still have to make sure they are all WOT at the same time. While the outers are progressive, they are mechanically progressive. I looked at some options for making them Vacuum progressive, but the system was going to be overally complicated.

I have been running the offy manifold with Webers since the spring. Once I got it set (no small task) it has run great with no adjustments needed. The linkage does allow you to change the setting as to when the outter carbs kick in which allows for performance or economy. The only thing to be careful with is hood clearence, that will be a winter project.
