My first rebuild or The results of my oil pressure concerns

I thought he wuz talkin bout the landlord that lives in the apt above him....

Does any one know the actual part number for a gasket which goes between the carb spacer and the manifold on a 73 ford 250 cid engine? Autozone ordered and got the wrong gasket the first time. I really don't know why they can't list the dimensions on the parts so I could be sure before ordering and waiting for the part to come in to see if it's correct. I got the correct gasket today.

Well today was to be start up day. Turned over really well but would not fire. Do have spark at least on first cylinder. Did not check them all. When I pump the accelerator I can see gas squirting in the throat. Last attemp there was a spark or flash coming out of the carb throat. When The crank sits on TDC the router points at 180 degrees away from block where the 1 spot on the cap is. Should be close enough to start and run correct??? Any ideas where I should look. Oh I did prime the pump about 15 minutes prior to trying to start. Please feel free to say the most elementory items so I can be sure I didn't miss something.

With what you are describing its likely 180 degrees out of time, you wiil need to lift distributor enough to reset the rotor to #1 at TDC.

No your right the rotor dose need to point to #1 at TDC but you also have to be at TDC on the compression stroke. If you are getting a flash in the carb then your 180 degrees off on the exhaust stroke. IE it takes 2 rotations of the crank to fire every cylinder and the distributor and cam only turns at 1/2 rotation of the crank.

I never knew the crank turned twice for every cylinder to fire. I thought it did it all in one revolution. So how do I know if I am on the intake or exhaust turn when I set the harmonic balancer on TDC? (notch in HB) Just a thought. If I pulled out the distributor, turned the crank one revolution and then dropped the distributor back into the same spot would that solve the problem?

It should be about right if you have engine on the timing mark. Also you can check with the spark plug out of the number one cylinder and as you turn the engine over you usually can hear the compression as it comes up to TDC mark. Another way is to use some tissue paper over the hole and whatch to see when it moves then you will know your on the compression stroke.

If you believe you're 180* out, you could just swap the wires rather than pulling the dizzy...

Put 6 where 1 is and continue the firing order around the horn. Good luck!

Robert!!! I hadn't seen you on the forum for a while I thought maybe Texas annexed itself again and you went with them. Hey everyone thanks for all the help. I took the long way around with the timing issue but when I was done she fired right up!!! Stu was right very nervous but after she started right up sure joy and pride. Ran her at 2000 rpm for 30 minutes and here are my findings. Oil pressure started at 41 and slowly fell over the 30 minutes but was still at 34 when I cut her back to what should have been idle. This issue is solved so I am going to start a new topic because I have other issues to discuss and I just hope all my trials and tribulations help other forum members along the way and I could have not done this without all the help. Please feel free to follow my future sagas and chime in There is a smile on my face which would take a week of woopin to take off. Thanks again to all.

:) :) :) :) :) :)
YAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!!!

Way to go, Denny, I knew you could do it! Now that you're past the anxious moments, you can relax and enjoy what you've accomplished. I know there are details to sort out, but you'll get there. There's lots of cruisin' season left.

Congrats!
U were an official shade tree mechanic now yer a Registered Back Yarder!
After the shake down (nother 100 mi?) may B U can get out to Fish Point or Point Au Gres?
Have fun!

:rolflmao: Hey Denny! Congratulations on your new engine with the 5spd!

Still working the nightshift here, just can't seem to find quite enough free time (or money...haha) for wrenching as often as I would like, but still checking in now & then. It looks like I chimed in right on time...

...right after you've solved all your problems

Seriously, great work my friend  Glad to read you had Rich and others' expertise to guide you through...now get out there and mash some gears and enjoy a drive in honor of our independence :D  :vert

Happy 4th of July to you and all the folks here at FSP :USA:

8) personally i dont want him "mashing" any gears. he had enough questions with the engine rebuild. :rolflmao: :rolflmao: (jk)

Actually I can't even move the car for some reason I can not understand right now because I am using a hydraulic throwout bearing which I don't believe anyone else on the forum have ever used.

"... hydraulic throw-out bearing..."
like to hear more on that!

I seen one clutch swapped over from mechanical to hydraulic. Had a late model bell (ranger) w/a slave in there put on an older originally 4 speed motor to make it 5. I think they had the late model hydro throw out and may be a hydraulic master the clutch peddle ran. Lines were all Ranger too I believe.

Howja do it?

BTW: May B there's an alignment issue w/the cracked bolt flange could disallowed a correct alignment in the throw-out? You said U used "an angle iron" for help... I wuz gunna ask then but didn't. Not clear what U did w/the metal...
Still rootin 4 U to get out to the Bay! (90* here very rare for New England).
