My kid and loud mufflers....

My 15 year old would like a better sounding exhaust system on his 250 powered Maverick. It's our project and it's gonna be his car. Currently the car has a practically new single exhaust with a 'turbo tube' muffler which sounds almost idnetical to the stock muffler, only slightly louder. While we don't want offensively loud, I know he'd like more of a performance sound. What muffler, mounted in the stock location sounds good on the six? I don't want to go to duals or try and mimic a V8 sound, just more of a performance note from the six. Have any of you had good results from a particular single muffler system? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

Glasspacks would be louder, but might be over the top. Maybe switching to a Flowmaster would give him the sound he likes, but personally, I hate mine.

I haven't heard any of the newer high tech mufflers like the hsuhpowers or aerochambers but that is another option.

dont put a glasspack on a single exhaust muffler system unless u like sounding like a beefy rice burner...i had one and HATED it...plus the resonation is a lot more with the glasspack..which is a lot more annoying than the ricer sound.....why dont u try a straight pipe...its not overly loud as long as its going all the way back...thats what i got and it barks when u giver...but doesnt sound like an 8...a 4' pipe only costs about 10 bucks, then some clamps..

i've got dual aerochambers on my truck (4.9L) and it sounds pretty decent, but i don't know how they'll sound on a small six

Badbrad, You could put a 40 or 50 series flowmaster delta flow, or a dynomax which would be a little more quiet. If you want more sound, rather than run a straight pipe put in a chambered pipe available from summit.
Good luck on this one, they sound good on a v-8, but on a six???
Has anyone used the chambered pipe on a six???? If so please speak up.
  :?: william

I have dual exhaust on my 200 I6 with Borla ProXs mufflers. I really like the sound of the Borla mufflers. They are smooth and quiet while idling and they sound great when you accelerate. :D

I liked the Dynomax Super Turbo so much on my Mustang and Mav that I put one on my Ranger also. Not obnoxious outside the car and not uncomfortble inside the car. Not loud until you want it to be.

CLIFFORD HEADER AND DUALS WITH DYNOMAX TURBO MUFFLERS....NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON KNOWS I DRIVE A 6 CYLINDER WITH THAT EXHAUST. SOUNDS LIKE A BUBBLING V8 AT IDLE AND REALLY SOUNDS AWESOME WHEN ACCELERATING.

Isn't that defeating the purpose of having a six?
BE PROUD OF YOUR SIX!
Edit:
I'm going with the largest high flo turbo mufler that will fit the stock location on my 63.
You can do the same, just brouse through the Dynomax pages on Summit. http://www.summitracing.com/
Here's mine:
WLK-17230 $75.88 2 ½â€￾ in. Inlet 2 ½â€￾ in. Outlet, Case Length 16â€￾ overall length 21â€￾ Outside Diameter 6â€￾ ROUND Dynomax Aluminized Steel Race Muffler.

Duals and flows, J-mo Mstang407, just put my dual out header and dual Flowmaster 40's on his otherwise stock 200 and it sounds like a stroked out and cammed small block. You BARELY touch the gas and it sounds like your going to kill someone, it is AWESOME. I loved my 50's but I am leaning towards the raunchyness of the 40's and turndowns after hearin em!

Hey man,
It was my constant pestering and your sound clip that talked him into it!!!! His only has the exhaust done and it is crazy raunchy. Not quite as deep as yours prolly because of the carb, but it is super sick sounding. I always wanted 40's but the only mufflers I could come up with were 50's in the design I needed for side exit pipes. I wish I could have gotten a sound clip of my set up before I got rid of the header...but thats ok, Im anxious to see what the flows sound like after a hairdryer

Well one thing with the stock manifold the sound is going to be iffy. The best way to change the sound is by switching the stock exhaust manifold for a header, like a pacemaker or hooker from Mike at FSPP and he has Y-pipes to keep it a single pipe exhaust. That will make one of the biggest differences in sound, then the muffler you pick to go with it will augment it. Borlas are great for smaller displacement engines like our sixes. Magnaflow 4" round universals are good sounding too.

Don't put a glass pack on it, I have one after three feet of 2 1/2 off of my Clifford single out header. It sounds good at idle almost kinda mellow and not loud, but when you accelerate it's the possibly the loudest thing on the street which I like being 19 an all. When you get up to speed it creats the most annoying cab hum ever, and it will drown out everything: your radio, a ricer's buzz can, and including the person next to you. Now if you have a nagging girlfriend, wife,or the worst your mother in law sitting next to you it would be a plus. :D

I've always liked the sound of an unsilenced air cleaner. Try flipping the aircleaners top cover over and see how it sounds when you floor it.

oohhh..i've not heard that! Gotta try it I guess. What am I in for?
