NASTY A/C COMPRESSOR NOISE....HELP PLEASE

i have a 68 mustang 200 with the stock air compressor mounted over the allternator. i just finished with my rebuild and everything runs fantastic!!... couldnt be happier with the engine. however when i was driving my baby to the exhaust shop (with completely open headers...way too much fun) i heard this nasy grinding noise.

loud, high pitched, and extremely annoying. sounded like gears grinding. not to mention the smell of burning metel. nasty nasty nasty... anyway i opened the hood and noticed the noise coming from the compressor, also saw metal shavings all over the place. long story short i sprayed good 'ol WD/40 into the inlet for where the condenser used to be(which was stolen) and after a day of really nasty grinding it went away....

WHATS GOIN ON???? and how do i fix it. as always any help at all is soo appreciated. thank you all soo much for all of your help on the rebuild. its finally over , this is the last hurdle.

is the system charged?
my first thought is that it might be the fact that there is no oil in the compressor, maybe it all drained when you were rebuilding the engine (i'm assuming that you had the compressor off of the car)
well, that's my only thought actually, i'm a little out of depth with AC systems, you should be able to get more help from these guys

didnt take it off. left it on because i didnt want to tear it apart too much. its made the noise before and i WD'd it but i want to fix it completely not repair it ya know

Sounds like you are looking at a new compressor and receiver/dryer minimum. This might be a good time to seek the help of a professional and convert to a 134a system, maybe a Sanden compressor. A/C requires specialized tools, the learning curve can be steep and costly.

can i just yank the damn thing out and re-route the belt....maybe use a shorter belt and just completely surpass it... if the belts not turnin it, then it cant run. right??? i just spent my savings rebuilding it. i'm broke as a joke.... we'll see if anyone else can help please let me know

you should be able to leave it on there, just get a belt that is for non-AC cars, that'll get rid of it, and you won't have to worry 'bout it till you get enough money to fix it correctly
