It seems like I have built just about everything I could think of, until now. My wife’s 61 falcon is in the home shop and finally being rebuilt. When I opened up my mouth about how cool the original 6 would be turbo charged, little did I know would change my nights forever. Being in the automotive fabrication business to begin with does help, but I do need some info from you experts to go further.
First hurdle I have encountered is the intregual head on the 170 cid. I am using a Holley projection TBI unit made for a 4-barrel carb. So my question is, what motors have a removable intake that will fit into my chassis with a small amount of modification? Or what heads interchange? Last question is what intakes are there out that are aftermarket other than Clifford? Hood mods are no problem if needed. I will post pictures now and then with my progress if anybody is interested.
Now I know I will catch some crap from some if you about what I want to do, but the WOW factor is just too much to pass up. Anybody can install a V8 in a car. But why be everybody. The people at Clifford performance have already told me that I need to stop taking whatever drug I am on. But the People at Hogan’s manifolds are all for it. So say what you want, think what you want. Bottom line is…. Stand out, Be different.
:)

How good are your fabrication skills? You can mix old-school and new tech to get an acceptable result.

During the '60s it was recognised practice (not common, but reasonably known) to mill off the common intake runner or "log". A steel plate would be fixed to the head with holes for each port, and a different manifold or direct mount carbs installed.

An approach like that could allow you to make and use a more contemporary sheetmetal plenum. You could fit it to a head from any period of construction, but typically late '60s onwards would serve better with larger runners and valves as built.

There are heads with removable manifolds - but typically you'll pay north of $1K to get one in rebuildable condition. A new (and improved) replica is in the late stages of R&D but apparently a good few months off coming mainstream.

The biggest other snag I can see, is finding pistons for that 170 which will live well under boost. Don't worry too much about Clifford opinions; the company now is a far cry from its heyday.

Regards, Adam.

Also think about the 4 main bearings in your 170, later engines have 7 mains. 1965 200 has 7 mains.
If you can find a 65 or later 200 engine you can upgrade pretty easy.
And also you can put a Duraspark ignition on that engine for more improvement.

Ok, if the 65? 200 has more main caps.. is the head still a intregual design? and will it fit in the 61??? machining the log style manifold down is a good option. Pistons are no problem. Several companies will custom make them with a large bag of money. Thanks for the ideas

The slant six is a four main engine. We better let those Mopar guys know!

More seriously, I'm yet to hear of a mains failure on an early motor. Head/intake remained integrated from inception, until the last motors were cast in 1982. The only exceptions are those made overseas - some as I described above.

Thanks for the info. I went to Pomona swapmeet this weekend and got some good ideas. Found an old Offy intake that I have to machine the log down and adapt. Looks like it will do what I want. Thanks again....

if u have the money and wann wait a few months Mike(Azcoupe) the owner of www.classicinlines.com and this site admin will be coming out with an aluminum head that will have a removable intake along with many different intake options

The 200 will fit right in place of that 170. There are also different heads that will bolt on, with removeable intakes. I would wait for the aluminum head, that's what's going on my 200, for a direct-mount 2 barrel. =)

All USA Ford small 6's (144-250) have an integral intake. Offy makes a 3X1 adapter and there are 2 bbl adapters available from Stovebolt and Clifford. Stovebolt is about $15 and Cliffy is about $50.

Thought I would share what I am doing. So, I know my car is no where done yet but thought I would post what I am in the middle of. 61 Falcon 4 door. 170 motor with a chevy pickup TBI unit. Home made header and turbo intercooled. I have pictures posted on our work so far here at http://www.myspace.com/118966100 BUT none of the motor yet. These will come soon. Right now the body work, paint, and interior are being performed and the shop is too full to finish my motor project. As you will see if you go to my Myspace page I have alot of work to do and little time to perform it. ( the hot rod shop is my night/weekend job) Oh the falcon is the wifes car and the only "Keeper" in the bunch. The rest are customers cars or cars being ready for sale ( inhouse owned )
