I want to put a 250 and c4 in my old 1963 comet S-22. You fellas who know these engines well would you please advise my on which specific year I should be looking for ? Well from my research, I would say look for one from 69-71. From my understanding 71 was the last year the rods were forged steel. That to me is worth it for the bottom end.
The head you want from reading is a 77 and up. These had larger valves and a larger log intake volume.
Are you just looking for the base for a rebuild?

well just found a 6 close to home but can you fellas help identify it for me. 7 main bearing caps, 3 3/4 +.040 bore (new) freeze plug side of block cast in info AL INDER THIS IS 08DE,
UNDER THIS IS 6015-B. AT end of block is the number 10 opposite end of block is fomoco and under it is 7f c or o cant tell exactly. is there something else to look for ? should have pictures tomarrow. just my luck I bet its a 200.............. lol guys asking 300.00 and said he,d throw in a couple heads for it. no casting numbers yet on these.
thanks again

So the engine I am thinking is a 68 model 200. But check the water pump and see if there are 4 bolts or three. 250s used 4 bolts on the water pump.

if it is a 200 and anybody else wants it I,ll gladly hook someone up with contack info. its a factory reman .040 engine. more to come when I know. guys asking 300.00 for it and will deal.

If it's a 200, post it in the buy, sell, or trade area. All of the info I got is from the falcon handbook. Do you know the # on the head of the engine?

D0DE-A is a 1.75 intake bore head. Used from 69-76. It has the 1.649 intake and 1.38 exhaust valves.

The other looks like a 1.5 intake bore head. Has the same valves and exhaust as above.

I'm not sure what the CC size is.
For either.

As long as the 200 is not from a 80+ Ford, the easiest way to distinquish a 250cid from a 200cid
is the starter location. The 250 has the starter located below the oil pan flange, the 200 (170 and 144 included)
has the starter above the oil pan flange.

Here is a writeup of how to identify the different small six engines:

Here is a list of the casting numbers for the engines (halfway down the page):

Hope this helps.

wonder what the grouping of numbers at that link means under the 'head' column?

E0BE-BB / D5DE-BA
D7BE-AB / D3BE-AA
D8BE-BA / C9OE-M_

I thought like block, head was: 'decade', 'yr of decade', then "stuff I'm less interested in".

I got a head that is cast "D3xx". Supposed to be offa a "'79 Fairmont". Shouldn't it read "D9xx"?. Or is this one of those things where the casting numbers cover a lot of years untill an enginneering change dictates a new casting number designating that design change? That could mean many yrs could have the same numbers? As I look at it it looks "small log" but I never saw a hex or large log (same thing?). I got 4 sm it seems (170, 3x 250).

These guys are giving you good advice and info. I would like to add that you may want to seriously consider buying the first 250 you find if it is priced fairly. Complete motor, preferably good used or good heads/block. They are getting hard to find. Check wrecking yards. They were in Granadas, Monarchs Comets and others.

got my 250 today, nice clean engine, all stock only thing missing was alternator & cooling fan / spacer. even got the c4 auto flex plate with it. now gotta find a 77-83 cylinder head that's a good core. anybody got 1 for sale ? sure wish I could afford the alum head and setup................

the 1971 head is a good one to build ? it will take 1,75 / 1.50 valves and hard seats for exhaust also 2bbl holley conversion ?
