Need polishing advice

Ok, I have my head ground down where it looks good...but I need to polish the surfaces I ground on. What do you guys use to polish the ports and combustion chamber? I'm looking for a really smooth almost mirror polish.

What about the cartridge roll sets from Summit, Standard Abrasives, and Eastwood Company?

Don't know much about them. I have a dremel and die grinder. I used grinding stones to get it where it's at now but want to get rid of all the roughness. Can someone elaborate just a small iddy biddy lil bit for an ignorant guy like myself?

Both Dremel and Proxxon sell sanding drums you can use for smoothing out the ground surface. They work just the way your grinding stones work, yet they´re less abrasive.
Remember not to polish the intake side excessively as the incoming charge needs some amount of roughness.

Now, if you wanted a mirror shine on the combustion shambers and exhaust ports also, you´d need polishing felt bobs and polishing wax.

Ya, I have some of those drums but they are too big for getting around the valve guide boss and I can't get them flat enough to work it right. I almost just said heck with it and brought out the 600 grit sandpaper but that will scuff on my 3 angle valve job for sure. I will try the buff bobs on the C. chambers though as thats pretty wide open.

I'm getting near assembly time on this build up. Once I get the head worked for my intake and assemble that on the head, the rest will go together. Ya'll have been a great help.

Takes you to the Eastwood page with some of the stuff I was talking about. The sandpaper goes right through to the mandrel, so they don't "lose their skin". You can also use a ½" diameter ball-tipped carbide die grinder bit to get close, prior any abrasion.

Try some Simichrome Polish. If you can find the coarse type, so much the better (for this kind of work). Also, Jeweler's rouge works, but it's finer than Simichrome, so it will take more time.

Use a cloth type Dremel buffer bit (small) or one chucked into your drill (bigger). Slather the stuff on and change it out when it gets real dark. Wear protective glasses as this stuff REALLY hurts when it gets in your eyes.


...don't ask me how I know that, 'cuz I don't want the insurance guy to hear about it.....
