I tried to start my 65 Mustang after leaving it for a while and the battery was gone.I boosted it but as it was trying and trying to start I noticed smoke coming from the solenoid.I turned the key off and the car continued to try and start.I disconnected the battery terminal.I have now replaced the solenoid, new battery and got nothing. No Click,no sound no turnover nothing. But idid get lights and the warning lights on the dash just fine. What do you think is the problem?

Thanks

hey

i would buy all new wire that go from the starter to the starter silinoid and to the block than new battery cables and terminals. that is all i could think of. somtime when wires/cables get old the break down on the inside, and if you do get head lights maybe it is getting just enough power for that but not enough for a turn over.

Not even a click? Put a tester on the ignition switch wire to the solenoid while turning the key to start. If you have power, try by passing the solenoid with jumper cables. Use one cable from battery positive and touch the out side of the solenoid to the starter to see if starter turns over. If both work, it's still your solenoid or how you hooked it up.

Check and make sure you hooked the solenoid back up correctly, when I changed mine I inadvertanly reversed the two wires.

CHeck your battery connection...I had a similar problem and it was the terminal fitting on the cable was loose and wouldn't tighten up enough to make a good contact with the battery. Just something else to check (and cheap to check).

The solenoid has to have a really GOOD ground in order to work. Do some scrapping and polishing to get a good metal to metal contact between the body and the solenoid.

Good luck

Found the problem.I did check the wires on the new solenoid and I had reversed them on installation. Thanks again.
