Just did a search for the proper points gap on my newly acquired 68 mustang with the 200 inline 6 with no luck. Any help and pitfalls to avoid would be much appreciated. I have financially decided againt changeing over to the electronic ignition till next spring (already had a new set of points in the glove box) Thanks I have been reading this site all week, you guys know your stuff. I don't mind the adjustment every 3000 miles with the points as I am usually doing stuff to the vehicles every weekend anyway.

PB-
My book says a dwell of 38 degrees and a points gap of .027. Plug gap of .034, initial timing at 6 BTDC and idle of 700 for manual and 550 for automatic transmission.
The other guys here know a whole lot more than what I know. Working on this stuff on the weekends is what keeps me out of trouble....

Howdy pb;

I don't have my '68 manual handy, but the '65 point setting is .024 - .026". Dwell angle will be 35 to 38 degrees. My guess is the the '68 200 points will be very close to that also.

If your engine is in otherwise good shape do yourself a favor and gap your plugs at .038" and set the initial timing to 5 additional degrees of initial advance over stock specs. If a manual trans, stock calls for 6 degrees BTDC, try 10 to 12 degrees of initial. If an auto trans, stock calls for 12 degrees BTDC, try 17 degrees.

If you get no ping, and you shouldn't enjoy the improved throttle response and mileage. IF you do get ping you likely have carbon build up in the chambers. Run a can of GUmot or Techron through the tank to clean it up.

Need any other ideas?

Adios, David

It is an automatic transmission. Thanks for all the specs. I knew you guys would know the right way to do things.

A match book cover is supposed to be about right. I haven't tried it yet or measured the dwell I'd get. I'll have to try that in the driveway someday.

Just a little info changing the point gap well change the Dwell angle: Dwell is just another (and more acurate) way of reading point gap. Changing the point gap well change the timming... But changing the timming won't change the point gap Or Dewll..
