I got the new MSD in from Summit this weekend. After installation it fired right up and runs great. That's the first time I've ever heard of an MSD going out. And it was only a couple months old.

This time I ran the ground all the way around to the battery ground on the block. The last time I grounded it at the voltage regulator but after it went out I still showed a good ground. I doubt that was the problem but you never know. I know for sure I have a good ground now.

With my real job keeping me busy I'm having a hard time finding time to work on it. Lots and lots of new parts to install and no time to do it in. I'm sure that I'm unique in not having lots of play time to work on my project.

I hope I don't break for awhile anyway. We figured it out last night---I've owned the Mustang for two years and my wife has had to come rescue me 6 times already. Now when I tell her I'm going for a ride she tells me to stay close to home. LOL

I had similar problems with mine, very close to when I put the MSD in. We tried everything, even hooked up the ole Wells ignition, but still nothing. Then we replaced the voltage regulator and eventually it ended up being the battery. After that things went to crap again and it ended up being the coil. Every time we thought it was the MSD but it ended up being somethin else. Keep your head up and keep your wife happy...in case she needs to come get you again!

I had the same type of distance limited riding with my old Harley when I first got it. It stranded me several times, and my wife or buddy would get a call to mount up the trailer and haul me home. I carried everything needed to adjust the timing as many times as it took to get home. I finally figured out that the bushings on the "distributor/timer" were worn out, and the silly thing would be out of adjustment sometimes 1 mile down the road, and sometimes it would take 50 miles.

I just insatalled mine not even a month ago and the only problem i've had since then is the starter. I've had to push start my car probably 10 times in the past month

Well Nathan, either you've "leaky" wiring or the alternator or battery is cactus. Check your current drain with the car turned off.

if you don't want to get stuck when your MSD dies, just bring the pink jumper wires that comes with it and keep them in your car.

this way you can just jump the coil to py pass the clips quickly... just pull off the red, blk, green and white wires from the msd box to the coil and then just jump the coil wiht the pink wires... if they didn't come with them you can make your own.

i know this cuz i have had 3 of these boxes go out on me. once in the fast lane going 70.. not fun!

now if you have a msd distrubutor (which i don't think they make one for a I6) with the 6a box and the box goes out then your screwed.. bring a spare box :D

Stupid Questions-What is the purpose of MSD? Is it compatible with Pertronix?
When I get my suspension nightmare figured out my next step is the motor and im trying to plan that out now. Now Im planning on some gauges and an electric fan and the rest is open for thought. Any suggestions? Thanks

MSD increases spark, adds rev limiter, etc.
there have been many threads on if it's necessary, or useful, or whatever
you should be able to find one of 'em easily

Chandler,

The MSD can be used with the petronixs module. It creates a Multiple Spark Discharge below 3000 rpm's. Above 3000 it only creates one spark. I'm not an electrical engineer but it works something like this from my understanding. The coil is a capacitor that charges and releases energy. The MSD can charge in just miliseconds allow more than one spark per cycle. I used it because I've heard they are very reliable and using it to wire up a DSII is so easy. It would be just as easy to wire up an original distributor with petronixs.

Although mine went bad in less that two months I still believe it is a reliable system. Mine just must've been made on Friday afternoon. LOL

I'm not sure about how much it helped because I installed it with the brand new DSII, new Accel wires and Split Fire plugs. I can tell you that the improvement with all was outstanding. Smoother idle, instant start-up even in cold weather, more responsive, and eliminated a miss that I couldn't cure at mid range rpm's.

After I replace the old, no choke working, fuel spitting Holley 1940 with a Holley Weber 5200 water heated choke via clifford adapter my car starts and drives just as smooth as my wife's 2005 Toyota.

Both of these improvements can be done with minimal mechanical ability and is pretty much a bolt on system. The hardest part is the mechanical throttle linkage to the new carb. You can buy a throttle kit from clifford, I fabbed up one myself. They are relatively inexpensive and make a great improvement in the driveablility of your Mustang. They will only create a slight improvement in the butt-o-meter though. If your looking for that you need to dig a little deeper into the old wallet.

I hope your suspension "nightmare" is not caused by the KYB's that I sold you. What's the problem?

I agree, "both of them."

Bob

both of them.... i have 3 other them.... oh wait i get it

btw you send the box back to get fixed? or did you just buy a new one?

I returned it to Summit Racing and they sent a new box out as soon as they received it and credited my account for the shipping to send it back. Summit has great customer service IMHO.

The cars are all really nice too. My friend has a 76 Comet that I just helped put a 347 stroker crate motor from Ford Racing in. It was an original 6 cyl that he has had since he graduated high school. He put a 5.0 in it a few years back so the swap was just an engine change.

i put in the msd and it worked fine until a wire came loose on my ignition switch. now i found out that the ingnition wiring is all screwed up. if you haven't converted over to a non points style distributor i would reccomend carrying an extra set cuz i go through them about once a month and you never know when they are gonna go.
