New starter, not starting

Well about 2 weeks ago my old starter went bad and had to be replaced. I got a new one from Autozone and put it in. It fired right up and for the past 2 weeks the car and starter have been running well. But yesterday things got a little fishy, I put the key in and try and start the car, the engine tries to turn over but real slow at first. Then after trying to start it a couple more times it turns over runs for a second but real rough and dies. After a couple times of that it finally turns over and starts runs hard for a little then gets going good. For the rest of the day it runs fine and starts fine. It did this whole thing today and it is running fine right now. Anyone have any ideas why it is doing this?

The starter may not be the problem. Ford systems are sensitive to battery condition, solenoid condition, and the cable connectiions to the starter and the battery. You may have a marginal system that works with a brand new starter, but can't accomodate one that is even slightly used.

Check, clean, replace as needed.

Ya, check the battery. Had similar problems, replaced everything, then did the battery.

Ain't that the truth! I had a truck that gave me fits for months. Those battery terminals gotta be clean and tight. Same for the solenoid. The difference is in the details sometimes. All my major components were replaced, and it was cables all along. Grrr....

well i have a battery that has been in there for about 2 months and a new solenoid that has been in for about 3 weeks along with a new solenoid wire running to the starter.

Is your neg bat. cable grounded to the block (and not the altenator bracket)? Then from there run a cable to the body. Grounds are very sensitive on their locations.

as was said make sure the battery post to cable connections are clean. This is a COMMON cause of you problem. Even my F-250 super duty will make me get out and clean the battery posts every few months and it's 40 years newer than my Falcon. I've been driving Fords since 1968 and some things never change much. Every Ford owner (especially 60's vintage) should have a battery terminal brush in his glove box.

I think this was caused by pumping the gas every time you tryed to crank it over... if it didn't start .... what you wound up doing was flood it trying to start it... Most likely..
as for the starter when you get it running go the where you got the starter and asked them to run a load test on it.. but like the others said it may just be conections.. they are touchy...
