New timing chain in...now valves making noise?

Hey guys, finally got my new timing chain and gears in and the car all put back together.

The old chain and gears were original to the car and loose. It fired up pretty easily and seems to idle fine. Only thing is the valves are making a good racket. Never made any noise before the new chain.

The clackity clack type of sound you would get with no oil up there. The gauge shows good oil pressure. The car has sat for about 3 weeks with no oil. I let it idle for about 3 minutes or so hoping the sound would go away. I don't want to run it and screw something up?

Any ideas?

Look and see if there is oil seeping around the rocker arms.

Do you have hydraulic lifters or solids? Some adjustment might be needed.

Not sure if I have hydraulic lifters or solids...Need to look I guess.

Could changing the timing chain cause a need for adjustment? As mentioned above, they have never made noise before the new chain + gears.

How long should it take for oil to make it up there? Any chance it is just dry? It did sit for 3 weeks with no oil. Maybe I should run it awhile longer to see if it will quiet down? Could I hurt something by running it?

how sure are you that you lined up the timing marks correctly?

you just swapped out the timing chain set, right?

I swapped out the timing chain and gears. I was VERY careful about lining up the timing marks (dots) correctly. I hope to never take the timing cover off again so I worked slow and tried to be as perfect as possible with everything. The dots are supposed to line up and make a straight line through the cam and crankshaft ends...That's what they do.

I don't think it would even start if they were off, would it? The car fired right up and seems to idle good. Just has a clack clack noise from the valve cover. It was worse when I first started the car and it did quiet some but not all the way. It is still pretty loud...

They probably just need to be adjusted... a little valve noise is pretty normal on these cars.

I think a 67 should have had hyd lifters and fixed rockers, but over the years who knows what could have been changed.

One of the unfortunate things about these engines is the neglect most of them had to endure. If you disassemble one you're likely to find a lot of gunk. The rockers and pushrods are one of the first things to wear due to poor maintenance.

The pushrod tips should be a round ball but if they've worn to a point, they will "clack" and should be replaced, along with that rocker.

I think you probably have hydraulic lifters (Should anyways). More then likely, in the 3 weeks with no oil, they drained down some and just need to be pumped back up. Pull off the valve cover and check your rockers.
