No Oil Pressure

I recently decided to replace the bottom end in my 61 170.
I put a complete bottom end kit in it and fired it up. Started perfectly but I have 0 oil pressure.

I have checked the guage etc and its all correct,

I did re-use the stock oil pump which was working fine before the rebuild. But on this motor the oil pump drive shaft has a built in washer (for lack of a better word) about 1/4 way down the shaft

I think I may have put it back in upside down with the washer towards to bottom instead of the top.

Before I go and tear off the oil pan again, I was wondering if anyone else has seen this and knows if this inversion of the oil pump drive would block the oil flow out of the pump.

This is the only thing I can think of

Also, Does anyone know, if this is the case, can I remove the shaft from the top, or do I have to remove the pan.

Thanks

Mike

Putting the oil pump shaft in "upside down" won't block oil flow, but it could cause a zero oil pressure condition if when you were stabbing the distributor back in it you had to pull back up on the distributor at all after getting it started on the shaft. That little tinnerman nut is supposed to be situated up against the block so when you pull the distributor up it doesn't disengage the shaft from the oil pump down below. I did this myself on one of the first engine rebuilds I ever did, but I didn't have oil in the pan yet so I heard a little "clink" in the bottom of the oil pan and knew something was wrong.

Pull the distributor to see if the shaft is present.

If no shaft, pan needs to come off.

If the shaft is there try to use a socket/extension in a drill to prime the oil pump (make sure you spin it in the right direction)

Did you fill the oil filter full of oil?
