Nope, no balance shaft in the OM617 5 cylinder. There were some other five cylinder diesels, the OM602 was known to be real good. They were different animals however, not really related to the 617 so I don't know if they used a balance shaft or not. As I said I have never heard of one even mentioned in all the years of MB diesel forums, shop talk, etc. that I have taken part in. My parts guy in Atlanta didn't come out and say immediately that he knew of one either, which he would likely know if there was, selling MB parts for 25+ years. I didn't ask him to press any further, so I'm not saying it's impossible.
Some say the 602s are better in all ways than the 617. I know that I'm not likely to ever have one, so it doesn't make any difference to me.
I must say that Napier Deltic engine is beautiful.
