NOS 200 head

I'm new here so I'm looking for some advice. I'm building a 200 for my Comet and I have a chance to get an NOS head for it. It is a 1966 head according to numbers. I can pick it up for around $250 still in box. It is just bare head. Would I be better off finding a used one or does the price sound ok? Thanks for any input.

If you want everything stock, then it would be fine.

If you want to upgrade the performance of your 200, then I would pass on it and look for a later year head that has the larger intake log and valves.

Just my $0.02.

8) starting with a good head is always a good idea. you can add larger valves, 1.75in/1.5.ex are a good size. mill the head until you get the compression ratio up to about 9.5:1, and modify the log to accept a bolt on 2bbl carb. i like the autolite 2100 best, though the carter weber is also a good one to use.

Or instead of adding larger valves you can find a later head whose valves come stock at 1.75 and 1.5++, with a bigger log++++, then add the 2v++++++... oh the posibilities...

Richard

PS, i'm getting a 77-80 head with a larger log, intake (1.75), and exhaust (1.5) for the same price, i'm milling it .075 to keep stock compression (actually it will be better than current comression :D )

Actually the service limit for the intakes are 1.739 to 1.763, but the exhaust valves are smaller at 1.378 to 1.402.

8) i agree with you to a point, but remember he will be starting with a new head that needs no work other than installing larger valves.

Thanks for the input. I probably should have added that I'm using an 82 model engine/trans. After reading some of the other threads, it sounds like I'd be better off with my stock head. Just thought the price seemed decent on the nos head.
