okay the block checks out--d8be-ge shows to be according to the tech page here a 75-80 200. i cant find the head casting #, where is that?
the number on the exhaust manifold is d7be9430ca. isnt that a pre79 250 california emissions piece? finally, i cant find a tag or stamping on the rear end--if you could id it for me that would be WUNNERFUL. the vin# is 9k36t635679. any other info you fellas have would also be helpful. its a 79 merc zephyr.

The codes are read as
e = 80
d = 70
c = 60
followed by the specific year
So a d8 would be a 78
a d7 would be a 77

the head casting number wil be cast into the top of the log. I am guessing you MIGHT have a E0 or a D9? head.

thanks guys. i dont see the cast # on the log so it must be under the kickdown linkage plate (feelin lazy and didnt wanna remove that today---maybe tommorow lol) for the C4. any ideas from the vin what the rear end is? i.e., track lock or ratio?

Yup, the Head casting number is located on top of the log between the carb flange and the firewall - under the kickdown linkage.

Try using a flashlight (like CSI) and see if you can spot the first two digits. If you can see D7, the rest of the numbers are not important.
