OIL PUMP DRIVE SHAFT 250 Log Head

Are there different lengths to the hex drive shafts.
I have a 250 out of a XA and I sourced from Rock Auto a hex drive length of 4 1/8 inches or 105mm tip to tip, as it was missing and it appears that it doesn't sit far enough out to engage the distributer shaft. Any ideas? Cheers MITCH
 
I might have one down the shed, Ill check tomorrow. i thought all 250s including crossflows are the same. earlier 200/221 have a smaller hex.
Easy enough to find on the web, mellings?

Thanks Mate. Yes the donk came without one as the previous owner did a swap for a Cortina 250 as the sump is different and did not foul the 4wd front axle and used the original in that. So I realised that the spare motors that I have are the smaller hex and shorter anyway, which led me down the path of acquiring one from Rock Auto. Will do some digging on the web. Cheers

I have checked Mellings and yes, they do have a couple of options in that 0.312 dia Hex that are slightly longer.
IS 98 at 4.34 inches and IS 74 at 4.52 inches in length, so have ordered from Rock Auto.
Which one is the right one, can only get them and see. Cheers and thanks for your reply.

Just thinking further, if you have one in your shed and it is not within a motor, can you measure it for me as a reference. Cheers
 
Ok, I found one in my junk:- 125mm long, 9mm across the flats hex. thats 4.92 inches long. So, the two your quoting are too short. And the hex your listing at 0.312 is too small as well. Sorry it took a while. PS, i found some other interesting junk as well!
 
Thanks for looking for it. The one you found must be for something else? We are talking inches, not millimetres.
The part I have is Melling IS-82 which at 4.14 inches in length, is the larger 5/16 inch hex shaft in lieu of the older ford donks which had 1/4 inch shafts.
When in position (and assuming it is home in the oil pump), the top end of it, doesn't protrude past the lower machined areas of the block for the dizzy.
So, it only needs to be 3/8 or 1/2 inch longer to have enough length to fit into the dizzy shaft when the dizzy is fully home and engaged into the cam gear.

It is always good to have a rummage in long forgotten boxes of stuff.
 
When I originally sourced the IS-82, it came from as search on Rock Auto for at a guess as something equivalent in America,
"Ford, 1970, Falcon, 4.1L 250 CID, Engine, Oil Pump Shaft."
Thats how I ended up with that one.
I attached the Mellings "Intermediate Shaft" listing earlier.

Latest update, Mr Aussie7mains.
Got a piece of 5/16 bundy tube and inserted to the bottom of the Oil pump drive and marked off as attached for length to upper surface.
Also marked the depth of the dizzy shaft within the block and the other mark is the amount of hex fitment within the dizzy shaft.
Whilst there I was able to rotate the pump and get oil to move around. Particularly noticeable in the oil gauge capillary.
It confirms that the 5/16 hex size is correct and by ruler, an additional third to half an inch length, is all that is required.

This may help:-https://handysteel.com.au/bright-hex-s1214. You could get someone to make a drive from round bar, grinding or machining the hex on each end. this might require heat treatment to get hardness at the ends. I did measure the hex at 9mm, perhaps Ford actually made this metric?

thanks again for the tip, but the two ordered from the US along with postage is $55.
The longer IS-74 one at 4.52 inches (verses my IS-82 at 4.14 inches) will fit, but I might need to grind the ends to a taper.
After f'n around with this 250 and the differences with earlier donks in possession, it wouldn't surprise me what Ford did!!!
Project is nearing the final stages
