oil pump gasket?

I have a quick question for those who've been inside a 200 six. Does the oil pump have a gasket between the pump and the block? I'm reassembling my engine, and my gasket set only has a gasket for the screen to the pump, not the pump to the block.

Also, my shop manual makes mention of one gasket, but I'd like to be sure before I bolt the pan back on. Thanks.

Mine does. I have the 1979 version (D8 castings). There is a gasket on the block and another on the pickup tube. Don't use sealant on these gaskets.

Jef,
I rebuilt my 170 six a year ago and had the same problem. When I disassembled I didn't remember if a gasket was there and one didn't come in the gasket set. I couldn't see any evidence of a gasket. Even after cleaning vat you can usually see evidence of a gasket. I have an old 1970 Motor Manual and it said to install gasket. Huuum, what do I do? I came to this forum and ask the question and found that many folks had this problem and most made a gasket to mount the pump on. One guy told me there is not supposed to be one there. He said if you don't believe me, go to ford or anyplace and try to buy a gasket, you can't find one. If you find one, put it in.I did and none was available. I put it together without one and 4,000 miles later oil pressure is excellent even at idle.

Sooo, it is simple, do as I did, go try to buy one. Logic says if one isn't made, one should not be there.

Go to my profile and read my old post and you will find the whole thread.

Thanks for the responses.

I did check at my local NAPA, and the guy said that there isn't one available, and he claimed to have rebuilt several of these sixes.

I haven't been able to get ahold of the guy who did my vat work yet, so I don't know if there was any gasket residue when it was cleaned (I disassembled it nearly two years ago so I don't remember).

There is also a discrepancy between the Ford shop manual and the Chilton's manual that I have been using. The wording in the Ford manual is vague, and says 'install the gaskets and then the oil pump,' implying multiple gaskets. The Chilton's manual has illustrations, and only shows the gasket from the pump to the screen.
