Has anyone else had problems getting a new oil pump pickup for a 200 in a Fox Mustang?

I've just spent two hours with NAPA, Autozone, Schucks, local guys and the biggest wholesaler in the region--not available anywhere. Autozone had a Melling screen that said "no part number".

Had me so self doubting that I came home to check the manual--yes there is one.

Ford says they'll sell me one for $96.00!! I told them I didn't need the whole engine--just the pickup.

I've tried to live my life in an ethical and moral way--but someone's sure angry at me today.

Graeme

Yep, had the same problem. Eventually NAPA found one on their computer in LA and had it sent up to me in Washington State this week. They only charged me 3.00 extra for shipping and the pickup with screen was only 22.00. I think I'd keep looking around.

Good Luck,
Gary

Im sorry you are having problems but I am glad you let us know. I have an 80 Stang with 200. I will be extra careful with mine since I know they are hard to get.

From the rpoblems Im hearing from different Fox body owners Im beginning to wonder if I should start collecting and stockpiling engine parts?

My car's a 1980.

Given the newest of these cars (1981) is 22 years old. It wouldn't hurt to collect some parts and cores if we intend to keep them. On the other hand, the demand is so low we may have a hard time getting rid of them. The scarcity is not due to high demand--but low demand and resultant low supply. Won't get any better.

Remember, we ARE a fringe group with a real narrow focus--well maybe not narrow--just in line.

Yeah, I'll just keep nagging parts houses.

Well, Graeme, I checkt advance autoparts here online for a 80 mustang 3.3 liter 200 6,
and it says "oil pump screen" I assume that is the pickup assembly, the whole tube and all as an assembly. They have one for $35.99
Here is the link, should be able to view it
http://www.partsamerica.com/PartDetails ... 72&PTSet=A

Autozone had it listed as Melling but not yet available.

Alex, thanks for the link. This morning I went to our regional parts wholesaler and they're giving it a try.

It's not that folks can't find the part number--it's just not in stock anywhere.

If I don't hear from the wholesaler by this afternoon, I'll try the link you gave me. Even though they list the part, as did most of the others, they may not have access to it.

Anyway, I'll give it a try. Thanks,

Graeme

Yw ^_^ I hope u can get your part somewhere atleast, I'm still lookin for a h2o pump pulley and reasearching a converter.

Well, I struck out at NAPA. So, I ordered it from Parts America from the link Alex supplied--hope they really have it.

Thanks,
Graeme

Alex, this should be another post--but--I'm having my C4 rebuilt and I'm trying to track down a converter with about a 2500 stall. I have the small bell/high starter engine with the small converter. I'll let you know what I find.

Do you just need the standard water pump pulley? For what year?

Graeme

okie dokie, :: crosses fingers 4 pickup ::

O ok, I know that um, was it Falcon or somebody was tryin to explain to me about the converter. I never seen one w\ the starter ring gear welded to the converter itself.

Anyways, I lookt at Autozone and I came across 3 special order converters they had listed under
65 Stang 200 ...

It was like
9 1/2
10 1/2
11 1/2

They list them for $80 + $27 core, thing is, I don know about the starter ring, I have to call em, but I want to look at my ol one, hm ... Course, I jus realized my old converter is from my old 68 200 not the 65, rrr. I don know if it makes any difference, anyways. I am not sure wha I will do tho if there is no starter gear on the new converter, hm..

Yea the stock water pump pulley for my 65 200, I wasnt out to find a performance or replacement, I dont have a pulley at all, I had lookt at my brothers pulley from his 302 V8 and the back of it was perfectly even w\ the crank pulley, I jus don know bout the diameter but it was a serpentine pulley anyways so.. and Thanx

Have you tried Mustangs Unlimited? They do fox bodies as well. Cal-Mustang may be able to help you too along with Sacramento Mustang

Good luck.

TCI used to list a Saturday Night Special for a 200 I6 that was about a 3000rpm stall. I dont know the price. You might also see if a transmission shop can rebuild your converter to a higher stall speed. All you would need is a HD stator and trans shops should have a special tool that lets them change the pitch of the turbine blades to change stall speed.

I'm not a big fan of TCI. I put one of their converters in the C4 in my Hudson and I had a bunch of noise from the transmission. Made the guy who built the transmission check out his work--nothing there, just made him mad. Replaced the TCI with a Hughes and the noise went away. On visual inspection the TCI looked like it was machined with a bastard file and the Huges looked like a piece of art. Maybe it was just a bad one--but I'd like to not use a TCI.

Well, the oil pump pickup/screen saga continues. Parts American, that listed it in their online catalog, replies that it's not available from the sources they checked.

I think I'll wind up leaving the old pickup/screen in the machinist's parts washer for a few day, inspect it well and hope the grit is gone.

This points up the need for those of us who have cars with relatively low production or unusual combinations to grab rebuild parts while we can.

Graeme

Graeme,

I have a picktube and screen from a 79 Zephyr. I put this engine in my 65 Mustang and had to use my original pickup tube and oil pan. It is in fine shape. Interested?

Kirk

Jack, that's what I'm going to do. I've rebuilt several engines over the years. A new oil pump and pickup has just always been part of the rebuild. Sort of an optimistic fresh start.

In this case, I'll just clean up the old one.

Kirk, thanks for the offer, but I'll just use the one I have.

Having said all this--it IS interesting that these things just seem to have dropped from availability.
