ok how do you tell a 200 form a 250 with out tearing it down.. aka just looking at it form the outside?

any info would be great!

thanks in advance

Howdy back Mav Man:

first- Most 200s have the starter mounted above the pan line. 250s are mounted below.

2nd- 200s use 3 bolts to mount the water pump. 250s use 4

3rd- the 250s are about 2" taller than a 200. From pan line to head gasket line a 200 measures about 8 1/16". A 250 measures about 10 1/16".

ah ic.. thanks very much very useful info...

but a few more questions...

you said most 200 have the starter mounted above the pan line.... what time would they not be? any certain years?

also can you put a 250 water pump on a 200? or are the water channels differant?

thanks again!

They changed to low mount starter during '80 production year. Mine is still high mount (D8 block) in an October 1979 built Mustang.

Can't mix water pumps, 3 bolt vs. 4 bolt.

Here's some pictures of the pump variance:

Also on the cooling system: The generic P/N for a 250 water neck is WO-4. For a 200 it's WO-1. They're interchangeable and the larger WO-4 means that you can run a SBF radiator with only downsizing the lower tank spout. The 200's radiator fittings - top and bottom - are smaller than the SBF and it makes cooling interchanges not so straightforward compared to a 250.

Maverick Man-
I don't think you're dumb....

Dumb is when you think you have a 200 in your car, then drive 400 miles round trip in the snow to pick up a spare 200, spend 3 months rebuilding the spare, and then wonder why the spare 200 you just rebuilt looks different from the motor you just pulled from your car. Then you realize that you had a 250 in your car all along..... don't ask how I know about this...

It can be hard to tell the difference since the 4 bolts on the water pump can be hard to see with all puleys and hoses, and some 200's had a low starter as mentioned previously.

For me, the easiest way is to check the deck height with a ruler:
8 inches = 200 and 10 = 250 (as mentioned earlier, too).
Just my 2 cents...
