Maybe I am over thinking. But, if it is out too far then the oil reading would be low. If it is in too deep then the oil reading will be too much?

we usta make our own stick.
Drain oil, fill to spec, shove ina blank, pull out'n mark.
Does it matter how far out? Probably not, its the correct mark w a y
down there not the end ur seein.
We'd bend ona hook to pull on and set the lill cap to correct spot w/a punch &/or tack.
U may not want to start that 'far back' but it can work...
HTH~

If you forget to put a hole in your homemade windage tray it will not matter, and when the newly directed dip stick hits the crank on first start up you will feel sick with horror.:banghead:

Thanks everyone. I pulled my leaking one out and figured might as well get it as close to stock as possible.
Plus, I have a CI high capacity oil pan. But, no one ever knew how many extra quarts it held!

The critical factor is the height of the oil in the pan. Overfull is ofcourse no good, and less than max capacity with a big pan is not that critical. Therefore, the stagnant height of oil in the new pan should be the same- no more- than the stock pan when full. Unless I'm missing something, the stock dipstick and tube is still accurate with the new pan. If the tube/stick is being replaced, mock it up next to the old ones and mark it off the original before install.
