what is the original color for a 223 in a 1959 truck? i want to go all original with this truck. i was told it was a black block, red valve cover, and a black or white air cleaner. is that for the car or the trucks?

I never saw a 223 in a truck that hadnt already been rebuilt a few times and all the paint was gone, but i know that the cars had a Ford red Block (or Chevy orange) whichever they had at the time. The rocker arm cover, oil filler/breather cap and oil filter cartrige are black. Air cleaner and power steering reservoir are Ford Argent silver.
Both my Y-block 8 and I-block 6 were originally painted with the Chevy orange. It was very common then.
Heres one in a '55 ford

i just heard from someone that its the opposite of your paint scheme with a black block and a red valve cover.

Mine looked just like his: Orange block, Black oil filter cannister and starter, black valve cover, and silver oil bath air cleaner.

<---------------- now it looks like this.

yeah, it's an offenhauser valve cover. I bought it from J&M speed in Riverside Ca. Digging through my receipts, it cost 123$ (Didn't come with gasket)

click for larger in new window- It looks a lot nicer now - I've detailed it out quite a bit. I'll have to take more pix soon.

The '59-'60 223 I-6 blocks were painted Black w/ Red Valve covers & the '57-'58 223 I-6s were painted Red w/ Black Valve Covers.
I found my Intel in Original FoMoCo Brochures of the Era.

I am able to go you one better, boy-o, Not only do I have an Offenhauser Intake to Match my Offenhauser Valve Cover, but I have a FENTON Intake & Valver Cover combination for my 223 I-6.

Post some pics. I've never seen a fenton set for Ford.

I as soon as I am able to locate my digi-cam, as it is still packed away some where after we moved into our new home.

By-the-by, I also have a Matching "Fenton Finned Side Cover" as well.

The proper name for the colour of the engine blocks in question is "Vermilion", which is a Bright Red to Orange Red according to FoMoCo Lit. & Chevy has nothing to do w/ it.
The '57-'58 truck engines were painted this colour & the '56 & before truck engines were a shade Yellow & once again this is from FoMoCo Lit.
