I'm going to try one of these and will let you know how it works out. It is listed for a Ford FE (352-428 big block), but a stock FE starter fits the 200, so this should work, too.

If possible, give us some clearance data for both stock and header exhaust manifolds.
Thanks,

I learn something everyday from this great board of ours. :thanks:

I never realized that a FE starter was interchangeable with our inline 6's.

Just a heads up. When I talked to PowerMaster at SEMA, they said the FE starters should work with an auto trans, but may not with a manual. Not sure why???? But then again, neither were they.

The nose depth supposedly varies from auto to stick (deeper on the stick?, I think), but I have been able to interchange the auto and manual starters on my 200.

On my crossflow I am using an auto transmission starter with the manual flywheel and bell. On the crossflow hybrid, I have a manual starter on the C4. Both seem to work fine (go figure).

I have a #3131 FE starter that also fits and works on the Crossflow, but it has a bigger case than the 200 starter. Other than that they look and work the same.

I'll keep you posted and we'll see if this hipo starter works. I'm going to fit and test it on a 200 manual bell/flywheel and the C4 bell/flexplate/converter to make sure.

BTW, have no real reason to use this starter other than it looks and sounds neat. I have no clearance issues even with the FE starter, however, this thing is much smaller than the regular starter and all headers should easily clear. That alone might make it work the $150 price for some.

Would the stock 3131 starter be considered a "high performance" starter for a stock 200? My 200 starter is a little sluggish sometimes and I have been considering replacing it. Would it put out more power and torque then a 200 starter?

pretty sure the part with bolt holes can be swapped between starters

I had one of those on my 71 and then it burnt up so I replaced it but they didn't make the same model and I couldn't afford the new one at the time, so I got a regular old starter. man what a difference the high torque or performance starter made. I sure do miss it. started right up compared to the engine chugging and chugging till finaly vrooooom.

That's why everyone should order FREE Mustang Parts catalogs. If you look in the Mustangs Unlimited cat you will see that the 3131 is the same for our 200's and the big block only on Auto Tranny's. Not the stick.

As MustangSix said the nose is different. I have a PowerMaster starter that I picked up at Summit awhile ago waiting to be installed. It does look like there might be some interference.

"THIS IS A TEST. HAD THERE BEEN AN ACTUAL EMERGENCY......."

That's one of the reasons I picked this one up. The starter I picked up above may work on a stick because it doesn't have a "nose". I'll have to see if the gear engagement depth is the same or "close enough". I'll keep you guys posted.
