Hey everyone. I ws gonna buy a Pertronix II for my 1965 Mustang. I saw on a website that they made different ones for different years. I was gonna get the one that fit into the year 1965. But then i was thinking that the 200 engine i have is not the original. The block is a 1980 and the head is a 1978. So do i get a Pertronix II that fits in with the head year ?

Also i am a little confused on the distibuter. I am gonna run the tri-carb setup. My distributer is stock as far as i know. Can i use this with the Pertronix II and Flame thrower coil? I have read some threads on the distibuters but i do not understand them. This is all new to me so i am still learning. Thanks for be patient.

Yeah, distributor is the key- I have a 66 head on a 78 block, but the distributor was for a 68 200cid. At least it works for my Pertronix Ignitor. ;)

Hi Naz,

There is an issue you need to be aware of regarding the Pertronix purchase.

You are correct, there are two versions available. One that fits the dizzy with the "C" shaped rotor drive and one for the "D" shaped drive (pull your rotor and the type is easy to identify). Most of the "D" drive dizzys are vacuum advance only dizzys, the Load-O-Matic. If you plan to run a triple carb set up in the future you will need a dual advance dizzy (vacuum and mechanical advance). As a matter of fact, if you plan to use anything but the Autolite 1100 in the future you will need a dual advance dizzy. So, my recommendation is to purchase the dual advance now (if you don't already have one), and buy the Pertronix unit for that dizzy (probably a "C"). You can use the dual advance with the 1100 until you upgrade by removing the spark control valve on your 1100.

Sorry if this is confusing. I had to buy 2 Pertronix systems because I was not aware of this issue. I would sure like to save the next guy the cost of this mistake.

Howdy Naz:

Also please note that your stock distributor is a vacuum advance only unit that is designed to work in concert with the Spark Control Valve in the stock '65 Autolite 1100 one barrel carb. Yes, you can use it with the Ignitor II, but it is not the best, or even better distributor choice for performance.

The '68 - '72, point type, stock appearing distributor has mechanical advance as well as vacuum, making it a much better performance choice. And, your stock '65 distributor will be very inadequate with a tri carb set up even if you use the stock Autolite 1100 as the center carb. The tri set-up will alter the vacuum characteristics of your engine.

If I were in your shoes, I'd start by opting for the '68 point type, dual advance distributor, which will have both centrifugal and vacuum advance, then upgrade it with an Ignitor II unit and FT coil. When you convert to tri-carbs, you will rely primarily on initial and centrifugal advance. To continue to use your stock 1100 Autolite, remove the Spark Control Valve, plug the hole and instead, use a manifold vacuum source for the vacuum advance.

I hope that helps to clear things up for you.

Adios, David
