Piston price

Those of you who spent the money on pistons for a turbo application, how much did you spend, and which company did you go with.

Forged pistons for a non-standard motor (SBC, SBF etc,) will run at least $100 each.

Our last piston purchase was $1295 for 12 pistons. 6 for our motor and 6 for a customer.

I just don't understand why forged pistons are so expensive for the Ford six. I can purchase a set of TRW forged aluminum pistons for my Corvair for approximately $360.00, and Keith Black high performace hypereutectic pistons for a little bit more. These pistons are run on a daily basis in Spyders and Corsas (Corvair turbocharged models) without any problems if you keep the boost under 15psi.

Considering there are a h*ll of a lot more 200cid and 250cid six cylinder engines (uses the same piston) than there ever was 145cid and 164cid (uses different pistons) Corvair engines, why isn't there enough market/demand for someone to come out with a cheaper piston?

Let the flames commence!

I figured it was somewhere up there in price.
As long as there's talk of cheap pistons, what is the limit on boost for a hypereutectic piston.

When i bought my pistons, Mike mentioned me was working on the possibility of a cheaper set of forged pistons. Might be worth dropping him an email.

In the Corvair, the boost limit for hypereutectic pistons is around 15psi without water injection or knock sensor/retard units. Excessive knock will shatter a hyper piston like a piece of glass; a forged piston will deform.

The advantage of hypereutectic pistons is that they do not expand as much as standard or forged pistons, so you can run tighter tolerances. Tighter tolerances yield less blowby, and therefore, more boost.

I would think that SRP (owned by JE Pistons) could easily make a mass produced piston for us all.

But that's the problem... even as many of these engines as there are out there, how many of us would actually buy them ?

10? 20? even 50 probably won't get the cost down significantly, and I think 50 sets would be a stretch.

But put me down for a set :)
