Prime the Oil System... will this work?

So looking at getting some oil into the engine.

I was thinking of hooking up a socket to an extension on my drill.
Then I can run that onto the pump drive and let it go...

Three very simple questions?

1. How fast should I go with the drill?
2. Drill in Forward? turn clockwise?
3. will this work?

I do not have a speed wrench so this was my solution?

For the top end, you can fill in the reliefs of the roller rockers with oil shortly before starting. Get your timing roughed in first, and be sure the carb is full and works. The shaft should turn clockwise (like the dizzy rotor); try the high speed setting on the drill but expect to feel some loading on the shaft.

I thought the purple rag in the dizzy hole looked funky and cool.

Cheers, Adam.

It's acutally a laytex glove... but it will keep stuff out :?

I have to get a new pump drive first... mine has joined the land of lost parts... I only had a few, but there were some.

Yes, using a drill will work just fine and run it clockwise just like your distributor. Speed doesn't really matter, but I'd say run it a couple hundred rpm anyway. Once the pump starts building pressure it will load the drill motor down pretty good.

I was watching "2 Guys garage on Speed TV and they showed a cool little tool.

It is a cannister that is pressurized. You load up 4 quarts of oil and hoo the end of hose where the oil pressure ssending unit then you release the pressure and oil gets pumped through the entire oil gallery lubricating everything.

I do have a question though. I am familiar with using a drill to spin the pump but how do you connect it? Dont you have to have a rod welded to a spare oil pump driveshaft for it to reach?

I have an old distributor shaft that I turn (clockwise) with a drill. Gear is removed and I don't use the housing. A foot long piece of 5/16" (or 1/4" for early engines) hex stock will work too.

I caution anyone against using a 5/16 socket to try to drive the shaft. There's too big a chance the socket will fall off and you'll be fishing it out of the pan.

If you use a drill, oil will pump out of the distributor hole too. Have some rags ready.

What I did to before putting the head back on and even after I had the head back on was line the cylinders with Marvel Mystery Oil. I then rotated the block by hand to get a nice good coating on the cylinder walls. Right before start up, I filled the engine up with oil and that oiled the gallery pretty good and the cylinders were all set.

Made sure the car would fire right up (which it did) and everything was fine.

Oil won't come out of the distributor hole! There's only one small oiling hole to the lower distributor shaft and it's aimed the other way.

Remember, nothing's turning or splashing oil. Just pressure in the gallery.

Really I just need to prime the pump, and get oil through the lifters and rockers...
since this is an oil through setup...

but I will also oil the rockers as noted
