problem w/duraspark conversion

ok here is the situation. This is after removing the points dizzy from my '69 200 engine.

I've got a new DSII dizzy.

Used 12 volt coil.

Used OEM blue grommet module.

I've got parts of the OEM wiring harness--horsehoe coil and 3 prong plug at dizzy. The other connections are good quality spade plug types with soldered connections.

I followed the wiring diagrams carefully, even checking with my wife to make sure I had the colors correct

When I give juice to the coil/module (engine not spinning) red wire, I get continual high volt spark shooting out of the coil tower.

When I disconnect the green wire between the module and coil, I no longer get sparking. So I got something going on with the green wire output from the module.

When I disconnect the dizzy plug, I also do not get sparking from the coil. So there is a trigger being given by the stator, evidently, to fire continuously. My black ground wire to the dizzy is properly grounded, the orange and purple wires to the stator are properly connected through the 3 prong plug.

I am thinking that the stator (brand new) is not working right. Just to make sure I wasn't for some reason sitting on a 'fire' spot, I bumped the engine to a different spot. Same results.

The white wire is not yet hooked up.

Anyone got ideas? Maybe a bad module, even though it does not send a fire signal with the dizzy disconnected?

Do you mean one continual long arc like a mini-welder? Cool 8) 8) 8)

Or is it a series of individual sparks like snap, snap, snap?

8) four possibilities

1: incorrect wiring

2: bad coil

3: bad ignition module

4: bad pick up coil

these are in no particular order. i would suspect either a bad coil or bad module though.

his coil has been tested in my f150 and worked fine then

yep coil is fine 8) Those are serious sparks. At least 1 1/2 " arc out of the center cap. They found the fuel filter cover and it looks like star wars, snap, snap, snap. Good thing I didn't have the plug wires hooked up.

Ok so I did another check. Disconnect 3 wire plug from dizzy. Reconnect red wire to juice. No snap crackle pop. Then I check the voltage to ground from the 3 wire module plug. I get 10 to 11 volts to ground on all 3 wires, including the ground wire  So it looks pretty clear that the Evil-bay duraspark module is shorted out eternally (and internally too).

Ok off to Napa. That's too bad about the nice soldering job I did, all junk now. Seems like I don't get many projects that don't have an issue with something.

I'm so happy I could cry

She's smmoooootthhh at idle and will still run at 350 rpm even!!! It used to run rough and die whenever it felt like it at 650 rpm.

This is an awesome upgrade to the points system. Now I need to beg forgiveness of that 1101 carb that I have frowned at so many times.

Next step, hook up the relay and vacuum advance. Regap the plugs. Get a new cap and rotor.

Still can't believe that lightening bolt that comes out of that coil. Amazing.
