Project Car - Part 2

LaGrasta
I agree with you, the TBI's and chrome plenum look awesome. Looks like something you'd see in a Ferrari, not a Mustang. Jim liked it so much, that he wants to do a feature on the car too, maybe for Mustang Monthy. The only problem is clearance. It fits in the stang (barely), but will not fit in a Falcon or anything with a smaller engine bay. However, we can resolve that pretty easily. Last year at SEMA, I found a company in Colorado that makes throttle boddies which are only two inches long. The injectors need to be in the intake, but we plan on installing bungs in all of our intakes anyway. Plus they are a bit cheaper, and I've heard they work better to boot. Not as finicky.

If you can make it to the Vegas show at the end of the month, I'd be happy to let you take it for a spin on the track their setting up. It's a slow track, but should be fun regardless.

Rich & Will,
Yes we will be going to Mid America next summer, and all the other events and shows we can fit in. As you know, I plan to quit my day job later this year. Then I can travel next summer to all the shows I can possibly make. I love going to them, and I like to drive & travel, so it should be a lot of fun. Rich, you need to go with me too. Your calling is working the booth, as you are a natural at it. I don't think I've seen anyone that can talk all day like you do, when your in the booth.

Will,
The seats came yesterday, and look great. Very comfortable fit too. I think they are going to work out fine. Thanks.

What about removal of the Shock Towers and a MS II front end set up?

It would eliminate the engine room space problem.

Actually, a single throttle body mounted on the plenum would be just as effective. The intake would still have tuned runners and with the injector bungs in the head, would be very free flowing. Good going Mike and crew!

One thing - Roll bar / roll cage? 11.99 is the NHRA cut off for a bar and a cage if you intend to dip into the 10's. With just a little bit more boost, this could be a 600 hp motor......

Thats just too cool guys!!!!! 8) 8) 8) 8)

Mike,

You need a  smilie!

Just wish I was closer so I could help too! I luv doing the all night thrash!!

Later,

Doug

With a last name like Smart(see my name) could you think Jim would do anything less?

No, we are not kin.

I totally agree! It would be easier. Much easier. It would also be lighter.

Mustangsix, the new E.T. for a rollbar is 11.49.Nhra changed it this year for all the newer cars detroit and other places are putting out that ran the number almost from the factorywith a little tuning.

I agree as well, which is why we are producing it. But only after we get the 4V intake done. Not only is is lighter, easier to manufacture, and cheaper, it's much cheaper. Those triple TBI's are expensive. However, a single throttle body just doesn't have the same effect on you as trips. They just look mean. This is a show car too, so we wanted something really classy and unusual. I think they fit the bill nicely.

I have to agree, they are very impressive! I have no doubt this is going to be a killer engine.

As a comparison, you can look at turbocharged 3.0 liter Supras. Easily boosted to over 600hp, some extrem versions have been pushed to over 1000hp. They have a DOHC 4V design, but the airflow on your head is probably similar. The Supra can be spun to well over 7000 rpm, but so can a small Ford six with some extra beefing up. With good bolts, I think the rods will be fine up to 400 hp.

If anything, the only real shortcoming is going to be the head bolts. An upgrade to 1/2" studs with an O-ringed gasket should take care of that.

I can't wait to see what this thing does!

Jack,
The block has been O-ringed but doesn't have the 1/2" studs yet. To be honest one of the reasons for the stock size studs was that we wanted to use the aluminum head "out of the box".

Maybe Mike has a pic of the bottom end so you can see the rods. :D
It should be able to withstand some abuse.
Will

   DUDE!!!! I mean WOW!!!!! SWEET!!!!!
I want one of those!!!!!!!!!
Too Cool.....I may never lust over a bent 8 again!!!!!!

Aside from the HD rods is there any effort to reinforce the caps?

Aussie's and Ford 5.0L guys use stud girdles. Some companies are making a girdle in IIRC T356 aluminum because the aluminum is strong enough in the thickness used to reinforce the caps but is claimed by the makers of absorbing harmonic vibrations.

As mentioned repeatedly I cant wait to see what numbers this setup puts down. The suspension setup looks equally capable and makes me wish I still had my '67 and '69 Cougar's.

Someone will need to get a camera to record facial expressions of other drivers when they find out they just got dusted by a Inline six fastback.

Looking sweet Mike.

Auestion I have is are you gonna keep this car when you are done with the magazine spreads???

are you gonna keep this car when you are done

:?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

Well, it doesn't make sense for me to have three Mustangs. Especially when I only have a two car garage. Last week, I had to rent a storage unit for one of them, so one needs to go eventually.

I've been thinking about which one, but.......
66 coupe - had one when I was a senior in HS, brings back lots of memories.
67 coupe - my first restomod, was my sons first car, best condition of the three.
69 FB - wanted one since I was 18, worth more, and my favorite. Plus it's yellow.

The 67 & 69 are both promo cars. So, I'm leaning towards the 66 as I can always make new memories in the other two.

Tough decision.

Maybe I'll hit the lottery. :D

If you just need to find a good home for her, I will park the wifes Yukon under the tree.

just wait till we buy all the new heads you can make, get rich, and build a 3-car garage!
