Question about #3 and 4 exhaust ports 200ci

1968 200ci engine

Hi,

I finally got the exhaust manifold off today. I started polishing ports 3 & 4 and also started to test fit and grind the port divider down. Does anyone have a picture of ports 3 & 4 from a 1968 200ci engine? Are there supposed to be ridges (5 of them) at the top of the port (My view: underneath the car looking up at the exhaust port)? There is also metal in the middle of the exhaust port. I don't think I will be able to fit the port divider in. Did someone previously install a port divider or did all 68 200ci engines come like this? Can I still install Mike's header?

To best of my knowledge al the American SB I6 heads had the ridges. My 80 200 head has ridges. Mu Oz head does not

if its anything like my head, then thats normal, a few questions tho...
Is the metal that splits the two pretty deep in the head or is it flush with the gasket surface?? If its flush with the surface, it already has been taken care of, if not, thats where the divider will push up against the head. The little metal bumps should have corresponding ones on the adapter. Someone else on here will prolly be of more help, but since I have my head off right now and can look right at it, I thought Ide try and help.

It is deep in the head.

When I was test fitting the port divider, I had the ridges facing down like in the picture. Is the head upside down in the pic? If so, that might explain the fitting problems...

I just ran out and looked at my poor head sitting on the garage floor (whole other story) and yeah, that picture is upside down. The bumps are on the top side of the port. Yeah, you still have to weld the divider in, put the slanted part pointing into the block, it will take some grinding to fit, but it will, then weld or epoxy it in.

That is normal. You will probably need to grind the divider to fit perfectly. Mine had to be trimmed.

Some of the early SB6 heads did not have the 5 ridges on the top of the 3-4 exhast port. The head off of my '61 170 doesn't have them. The port divider still fit in just fine though. Rather odd though, my '63 170 head is the exact same casting # & it has the ridges. Take care,

My 1978 200 cid head did NOT have ridges in it.

I had to grind the divider quite a bit to fit it in there real nice.
